Job summary

Radiotherapy Physics provides all the background scientific and technical data, advice and expertise to the radiotherapy and physics departments for the treatment machines, computer systems and specialized devices. This is fundamental for patient doses to be prescribed and given correctly, safe operation of equipment and staff protection from X-Rays. It includes specifications for the equipment, calibration and QA, repair & maintenance, data networking and computer control, and individualized patient dose computations. Its expert sections include mechanical engineering, machine maintenance & repair, brachytherapy, computing & electronics, treatment planning, dosimetry, training & teaching, and R&D.

The role of the post holder is to manage the service comprising of a team of Clinical Engineers and Technologists in

  • Radiotherapy Equipment Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering Workshop
  • Clinical Engineering associated with Medical Devices

In addition the post holder is the lead for Health and Safety within the Radiotherapy Physics Service.

Main duties of the job

The postholder advises the Head of Radiotherapy Physics on the management of these services including equipment needs, the deployment of staff, health and safety, radiation protection issues and quality. They regularly review section KPIs and are responsible for development of strategies for continual improvement.

Radiotherapy Equipment Management

The post holder manages the team which keeps the linear accelerator treatment machines and other radiotherapy equipment (including Brachytherapy), operational, maintained, repaired and safe, and assists with their installation, commissioning, QA and development. The post holder is the Radiation Protection Supervisor during reactive and planned maintenance of RT equipment and is responsible for ensuring compliance with IRR17 and the local rules. The post also includes designing innovative equipment and giving specialist advice.

Required to:

Communicate complex information with regard to problems with Radiotherapy Treatment Machines for discussion on the appropriate course of action, to all staff groups concerned, including the Radiotherapy Services Manager, Physicists and Manufacturers Service department.

Plan the annual Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule to include manufacturer annual PMI/MQA visits for Varian/Elekta and BrainLab ensuring all defined tasks are accounted for at the pre-defined frequency.

Attending multi-disciplinary meetings on the waiting times for radiotherapy target figures and compile monthly uptime data for all Linacs as a KPI for senior management and presentation at the Medical Device Group.

Required to demonstrate extensive knowledge and expertise across a number of subject areas, including Varian and Elekta platform specific advanced training.

Completes all section PADRs with Engineering staff and communicates all relevant information acquired from the various group meeting attended (Section Managers, MDG, H&S and Education Steering Group) to departmental staff as appropriate.

Eligibility to join the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists.
