Locum Consultant in Clinical Oncology - Urology

Job summary

This post is fixed term for 12 months to meet the needs of the service.

The post holder will provide services to Cardiff and Vale University Health Board as a core member of the MDT along with Dr Jake Tanguay (Urology team lead), Professor John Staffurth, Dr Loretta Sweeney and Dr Srijith Sashidharan. Other VCC Urology team members include Consultant Clinical Oncologists Dr Nachi Palaniappan, Dr Elin Evans, Dr Alok Chand, Dr Jim Barber, Dr Louise Harris and Consultant Medical Oncologists Dr Satish Kumar, Dr Ricky Fraser and Dr Helen Fitzgerald. The Urology site-specific team (SST) have a history of innovative leadership in service redesign and patient experience including participation in the national PSA self-management pilot, non-medical prescriber-led clinics, early discharge to primary care and extended clinical nurse specialist roles as well as reduced frequency virtual systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) visits for well patients. Radiotherapy developments include high dose rate brachytherapy, Physics radical plan approvals, Advanced Practice and Consultant Radiographer roles, non-medical outlining and a Radium-223 service. The Urology SST also have a strong track record with recruitment to multiple phase 3 clinical trials leading to international practice changing results.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join a large team of consultants, specialist registrars, specialty doctors, core medical, F2 and GP trainees, advanced nurse practitioners and physician associates, and will contribute to outpatient and inpatient clinical care, including the Acute Oncology Service (at VCC and providing advice to Health Board colleagues when on call) and the Assessment Unit. The post holder will participate in the consultant 24-hour on call rota (pro-rata, approximately 1 in 30 for a whole time equivalent), which is of low intensity. Velindre University NHS Trust, together with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management is introducing a mentoring scheme for newly appointed consultants. There is a Staff Clinical Psychologist and a 24-hour Employee Assistance Programme for counselling support for all staff, providing confidential assistance with any work, personal or family issues.
