To complement our teams, Public Health Wales is seeking to appoint a highly motivated and enthusiastic Public Health Specialist to the position Consultant in Environmental Public Health on a 1.0 substantive post in our Health Protection Division.
The Environmental Public Health Service is delivered jointly between Public Health Wales and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) Environmental Hazards and Emergencies directorate office in Cardiff.
The successful candidates will be appointed to the Medical and Dental Consultant salary scale (£106,000-£154,760) or if from a background other than medicine to NHS Agenda for Change Band 9 (£106,197-£123,091).
Main duties of the job
The Consultant in Environmental Public Health Service will work within a team that aims to protect health and prevent health harms from environmental hazards and a changing climate, increase the health benefits linked to environmental assets, and narrow associated inequalities by improving health for all. It delivers reactive services in line with requirements of the Civil Contingencies Act, responding to a wide range of environmental events whilst working with multi-agency partners to protect the people of Wales. As part of the team, you will provide specialist advice and input on the management of environmental public health issues, leading on the response to incidents as required. The Service also works proactively to address the environmental determinants of health, including air quality, sustainable transport, contaminated land and water. You will provide evidence-based advice and guidance to support policy and practice decision making at national and local levels.
The appointee will also be part of the Health Protection Out of Hours Rota providing consultant support regarding incidents and enquiries made to the service.

Established in 2009, it provides expert public health advice in relation to disease surveillance, prevention and control; environmental hazard surveillance and control; child protection; promoting health and well-being; health, social care and well-being strategies; public health policy and healthcare planning.

- Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register or UK Public Health (Specialist) Register
- If included in the GMC Specialist Register in a specialty other than public health medicine, infectious diseases medicine or medical microbiology, candidates must have equivalent training and/or appropriate experience of public health medicine, infectious diseases medicine or medical microbiology practice
