Job summary

Band 4 post available for trainee AAA Screener.

This post is covered under NHS Annex 21 salary arrangements. This will mean a no detriment arrangement for existing NHS employees. A continuation of existing salary maximum to the top of Band 3 for the duration of training. Once training is completed, the salary moves to the bottom of Band 4 and the increment date changes to reflect this. Applicants external to the NHS, the salary arrangement is 75% top of Band 4 for the duration of the training, although a credit can be applied for relevant experience to take the salary to the top of Band 3.

The Wales Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme was implemented on 1 May 2013 and aims to halve the AAA related mortality in the eligible population by 2025, that is, 65-year-old men living in Wales.

The trainee screener will be expected to undertake the level 4 diploma in AAA screening and level 3 diploma in fundamentals in health screening. The training requires both academic and practical assessments. The role will cover the North Wales region, with occasional requirement to travel across other regions of Wales. Once training is completed the post holder will then become a permanent AAA screener. This role does require excellent hand eye coordination.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

The Screener will provide appropriate information to men attending the community screening and surveillance clinics, especially where barriers to understanding exist. The Screener will ensure that men attending clinics are fully informed and aware of the implications of AAA screening prior to gaining informed consent.

Performing an abdominal ultrasound to determine if an aneurysm is present or not and giving the appropriate results and advice.
