Job summary
Diabetic Eye Screening Wales (DESW) are seeking enthusiastic and committed Health Care Support Workers to join a new team as retinal screener graders based in Newtown, Powys.This is a rare opportunity to be part of the set-up of a new regional team for our Mid-Wales transformation project which aims to achieve an 'excellent screening service', offering participants equal access to eye screening across Wales.
This role involves screening and grading on rotation, with the primary focus on screening. There will be an opportunity for full training for successful applicants and therefore direct experience of diabetic retinopathy grading and screening is not essential. We are committed to providing a high-quality service to our participants and are looking for someone who cares about the people that we see. Someone who can work with us to continually improve the service that we provide.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic organisation and contribute to its development. Excellent communication skills are essential, along with a caring and patient-focussed approach. An understanding and/or experience of working with SLR digital cameras is desirable, with retinal fundus camera experience highly advantageous.

Main duties of the job
The main duties of this role are as follows:
- Fulfil the Healthcare Support Worker role to deliver clinics in line with service demand.
- Guide participants through screening appointment and ensure accurate record keeping.
- Accurately check pupil dilation and administer eye drops within set timeframes to screening participants in line with DESW protocols.
- Capture high quality digital images of the retina using specialised cameras.
- Provide quality assured primary and secondary grading to identify risk features of diabetic retinopathy.
- Follow strict criteria, and work within programme standard operating procedures and guidelines.
- Expected to attain a retinal screeningDiplomato be able to practice independently but full training and support will be provided.
- You will be expected to undergo regular training sessions and be able to comply with policies and procedures for the programme and for PHW, such as participant confidentiality and data security.
- Perform each appointment in a caring, professional manner, recognising and respecting individuals' differences.
We are looking for someone with patient facing experience, who is an excellent communicator. Previous NHS experience is not necessary (although advantageous), as training will be provided. Please see the Job Description and Personal Specification for greater detail.
