Job summary

This is a Specialty grade post, for the PHW microbiology service to the Betsi Cadwallader University Health Board (BCUHB). In this role you will join the expanding clinical infection team delivering services to BCUHB and supporting the wider Public Health Wales network.

The post is intended to support delivery of infection services to BCUHB, but it is anticipated that adequate time will be protected to allow training and education, and for support of appointees who may wish to work towards application through the CESR process for entry onto the GMC Specialist Register.

Main duties of the job

The provision of service expectations will be tailored to the skills, experience and knowledge of the individual candidate, and will be supported within a training environment.

Undertake duties relating to the provision of the Clinical Microbiology/ Infectious Diseases services across the Betsi Cadwallader University Health Board area. Medical staff are expected to undertake ward rounds as part of the clinical on-service commitments in the acute hospitals serving BCUHB.

These duties will include:

Advice regarding appropriate specimens, appropriate involvement in specimen analysis, validation and interpretation of results, and involvement in the infection management services to clinical teams across the BCUHB and the General Practices served by the laboratories.

Appropriate involvement in policy, SOPs, care pathways etc. preparation, relevant to Medical Microbiologist duties.

Contribute to the Infection Prevention and Control Service.

Support the OPAT service.

Take part in the clinical microbiology out-of-hours according to skills and experience. The frequency of the on-call commitment will be approximately 1 in 5.

Support Quality Improvement through the development of evidence-based guidance.
