Clinical Lead, Lung Cancer Screening Programme

Job summary

This is a very exciting opportunity to make a significant difference to reduce impact of lung cancer for the population in Wales to improve early detection and reduce deaths from lung cancer.

The UK National Screening (UK NSC) recommends targeted screening for lung cancer for people aged 55 to 74 identified as being at high risk of lung cancer. Welsh Government has asked Public Health Wales to establish a small team to undertake the scoping for a national targeted lung cancer screening service for Wales from April 2024.

Main duties of the job

The role will provide the clinical and professional advice to the Programme lead and Consultant in Public Health Screening Division relating to all aspects of respiratory medicine, lung cancer diagnosis and treatment and lung cancer screening. Learning from the Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB lung health check operational pilot will be a key part of the work for planning as well as learning from other UK countries. This role will involve working with multi-disciplinary team of clinical, service and technical specialists to produce high quality deliverables for submission for consideration to Welsh Government.

The Clinical Lead, Consultant Respiratory Medicine will provide the clinical and professional input to all clinical aspect for the planning of a national targeted lung cancer screening programme. The main tasks of planning work include:

  • Outline of the potential benefits and challenges of introducing a targeted lung screening programme in Wales. This to include an assessment of activity, the number of lung cancers identified as well as incidental findings, the number of interventions required and the value of earlier diagnosis.
  • The proposed national pathway that will involve clinical engagement, new technology and data and digital considerations based on a once for Wales approach.
  • Development of proposed quality assurance metrics for a national targeted lung cancer screening service.
  • Assessment of the estimated costs to establish a programme and expected annual running costs including number of staff required, implications for health boards and value for money considerations.
  • Consideration of the role and integration of smoking cessation service and anything else that is considered fundamental to a lung screening programme.
  • Assessment of how the programme could be phased taking into consideration equity of access across Wales.
  • Production of a report on findings and options appraisal for how a national programme can be implemented in Wales for consideration to Welsh Government.
