We have an exciting opportunity in West Wales as we are seeking to recruit a HCPC Registered 8a Biomedical Scientist with relevant experience in diagnostic Microbiology. They will support the Operational Manager to lead the Microbiology Department and be based at Singleton Hospital, Swansea.
Public Health Wales Microbiology Swansea is situated within Singleton Hospital and is one of the largest Microbiology Laboratories within Swansea Bay University Health Board, providing a wide range of diagnostic services to hospitals, clinics and general practitioners within mid and West Wales. The laboratory offers a comprehensive Microbiology service covering Bacteriology. The Clinical Laboratories are ISO 15189 accredited and approved by a number of bodies for training purposes. Rapid, accurate and advanced molecular laboratory techniques are in use to provide a better diagnosis and patient care management.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will oversee running of the laboratory working closely with the Operational Manager and speciality leads. The successful candidate will have over sight for the provision of safe and effective delivery of the Microbiology services within the Singleton, providing leadership, support, supervision, appraisal and performance management to qualified and support staff, liaising closely with other health teams and stakeholders.
Candidates will need to be enthusiastic, well-motivated and innovative, demonstrating good organisational and practical abilities supported by scientific knowledge. You will need to be educated to Masters Level or possess a higher specialist diploma. We would also be looking for management qualification or past experience. The successful candidate will have well developed interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to lead and support individual and team working.

To ensure the Bacteriology Service operates within allocated budgets.
To provide a high standard of professional expertise, lead and encourage the professional development of staff.
To ensure a safe working environment, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act.
To ensure the Public Health Wales Swansea Bacteriology laboratories make an effective contribution to the outputs of the health protection service, the wider Public Health Wales service and the National Health Service (NHS) in Wales.
To facilitate and co-ordinate research, development and surveillance projects within the Bacteriology laboratories and ensure support for programmes across Wales.
The post-holder will be involved and is expected to contribute to local pathology/ trust wide issues and National initiatives relevant to pathology services, responding positively to the changing demands on the service, through innovation, communication, setting standards and achieving results.
