Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Research and Evaluation Division within Public Health Wales (based in Cardiff) as a Public Health Research Officer linked to the Health Foundation funded Networked Data Lab. In this role, you will join a multi-disciplinary team to support the delivery of analytical insights from routine health and care data to inform action to improve health and social care in Wales and the UK.

Main duties of the job

Key aspects of this role include managing the day-to-day running of the project and liaising with the UK wide Networked Data Lab teams, as well as our third sector and academic partners to design and conduct projects. These projects provide new insights into challenges facing the health and social care systems in the UK.

In this role, you will be expected to understand health and care systems across the UK and their data structures. The successful candidate will be highly organised and numerate through proven experience or qualifications, with a curious mind, strong attention to detail, an aptitude to problem solve, and will be motivated to deliver robust evidence to inform action.

Qualifications

Essential

  • An undergraduate degree, or equivalent experience, in a numerate subject
  • Understanding of the wider health and care system in Wales and/or the wider UK
  • Understanding the importance of data standardisation and current ongoing issues affecting population health

Desirable

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a mathematical, statistical, computer-science, epidemiology, operational research, informatics or a similar discipline

Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience of working autonomously and as part of the team, with the ability to access advice and guidance when necessary
  • Experience of statistical analysis using software packages such as R, STATA or SPSS
  • Experience of communicating information to others through writing short summary reports, or verbal updates
  • Experience of manipulating large and complex datasets within a relational database environment and creating outputs for use by others
  • Experience of carrying out brief literature reviews
  • Experience of data management and the management of projects delivered against targets

Desirable

  • Experience of working in public health or an environment requiring similar competencies
  • Experience of research and development
  • Experience SQL, and or GIS systems
