Job summary

Do you have experience of working at a strategic level in public health? We currently have a secondment opportunity until March 2023 for a Senior Public Health Practitioner to join Public Health Wales as part of a partnership project between Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCU) Public Health Team, BCU HMP Berwyn Healthcare Team and HMP Berwyn.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who is passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of the prisoners and staff in HMP Berwyn and their families in the community. The role will lead the delivery of the HMP Berwyn Health and Wellbeing Strategy. The strategy is a whole prison approach to Health and Wellbeing with a particular focus on mental health and wellbeing, diet, physical activity, substance misuse (including alcohol), oral health, screening, immunisation and sexual health.

The position will be based in HMP Berwyn, Wrexham with the expectation that you will occasionally be required to travel to the Public Health Wales Preswylfa Office in Mold.

This is a great opportunity to develop and influence the public health agenda and tackle inequalities. The post-holder will be expected to work with a range of partnership organisations both within and external to the prison.

Main duties of the job

This is a Senior Public Health Practitioner role within the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCU HB) Public Health team. The postholder will have responsibility for leading the delivery of the HMP Berwyn Health and Wellbeing Strategy. The strategy is a whole prison approach to Health and Wellbeing with a particular focus on mental health and wellbeing, diet, physical activity, substance misuse (including alcohol), oral health, screening, immunisation and sexual health.

The post holder will contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of a range of public health programmes that promote health and wellbeing across throughout the prison for staff, prisoners and their families.

The role involves working with a range of departments and partner organisations both within the prison and the wider community. The post holder will provide specialist advice and support on the development and delivery of public health/health promotion programmes and initiatives to address health inequalities.

Our Local Public Health Teams (LPHT) will soon be transferring from Public Health Wales to the relevant local Health Boards. We will now be taking steps to work through the transfer over the coming months.
