Dental Nursing role with the Maxillofacial Department.
The Department is a very busy Department which consists of Restorative, Oral Surgery, Maxillofacial Orthodontics and Dermatology. The Department also has its own Radiography suite which the Radiography qualified Nurses manage.
Nurses are expected to rotate within all of these specialities so could be doing something different everyday.
The work is very varied and very interesting. We see a large majority of patients who cannot be treated in primary care, for various reasons.
Our Restorative team do lots of varied work from implants to cancer patients and prosthetic work.
The Oral Surgery team treat anything from an extraction to Apicectomys and Surgicals.
The Orthodontic team are treating the complex cases that cannot be treated in specialist practises they are also involved with patients having jaw surgery.
The Maxillofacial team are involved with patients receiving cancer care for all Head and Neck Cancers including Dermatology procedures.
There is always a chance to progress with various Training courses to upskill for example, Radiography, Oral Health, Implantology.
Main duties of the job
- Setting up of clinics and prepping of notes, either for new patient clinic or Locals clinic.
- Assisting all clinicians from SHOS to Consultants in all specialties including Restorative, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Maxillofacial.
- Adhering to all department protocols,policies and procedures.

Job responsibilities
- To maintain high standards of patient care and adhere to hospital policy and procedures. To participate in achievement of quantity standards and in quality monitoring, with particular emphasis on waiting times in clinics and on customer care in addition to high standards of clinical care.
- To prepare surgeries, including preparation of instruments and equipment for all Dental/Surgical procedures.
- To liaise with and assist clinical, medical and dental staff in all procedures.
- To attend peripheral clinics, providing nursing and radiography support when appropriate.
- To provide oral health education to patients on treatment, oral hygiene, dietary needs and other health promotion areas as relevant and to provide information, advice and support regarding their treatment.
- To ensure medical equipment and instruments are checked, maintained and suitable for their purposes, reporting any defect to the nurse manager and assisting in arrangement for repair and replacement.
- To make patient appointments when appropriate, inputting data into hospital and departmental information system, and obtaining necessary information from such systems.
- To report any complaints to the Clinical Nurse Manager, participating in complaints investigation and completing report forms as necessary.
- To assist in stock control, maintenance of adequate stock levels. Conduct stock takes when required.
- To participate in departmental Audits and collate information when required.
- To assist in the training of new Dental Nurses and act as a mentor when required.
- To attend departmental meetings and training sessions.
- To use all relevant qualifications gained such as, tracing cephalometric radiographs, taking dental photos, assist in dental implants and the taking of dental radiographs.
- To participate in individual performance reviews.

- To liaise and support MDT in a flexible and friendly manner.
- To provide patients with support and to maintain high standards of patient assistance including treatment and care, adhering to hospital and dental progress reports nursing procedures.
- Preparation of surgery to include Maintain the professional approach necessary instruments and equipment required by the Department.
- To undertake the care and cleaning of Maintain the Trust standards in infection the instruments used.
- Reporting all items control in need of repair or replacement.
- To keep the Nurse Manager informed.
- Maintains professional approach to any complaints or difficulties working, ensuring good service in dealing with patients is continued.
