Job summary

The department of Urology at Portsmouth University Hospitals are looking to appoint to our established robotic and surgical oncology fellowship programme, based at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, for 2024. This is an exciting opportunity, in partnership with Intuitive, to provide comprehensive training in urological robotics. The post holder will work through a structured training syllabus, complete with online and simulator training, dry lab, web tab training; which if successfully completed will result in accreditation in robotic surgery. The hospital has three (soon to be four) Intuitive robotic systems, as part of a multi-specialty robotic programme, including urology, upper GI, colorectal, gynaecology and ENT. The urology department has five robotic surgeons, providing a comprehensive robotic service covering radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, nephro-ureterectomy, radical nephrectomy, cystectomy with intra-corporeal reconstruction, and a benign reconstruction. The fellowship programme can be tailored to meet the requirements of the successful applicants experience and future sub-specialty ambitions.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will spend and average of 2 full days per week in our robotic theatres, undertake two clinics, a weekly cancer MDT and have time to undertake audit and research. There is also a commitment to a 1:7 middle grade on call.

This is an exciting opportunity, in partnership with Intuitive, to provide comprehensive training in urological robotics. The hospital has three Intuitive robotic systems, as part of a multi-specialty robotic programme, including urology, upper GI, colorectal, gynaecology and ENT. The urology department has five robotic surgeons, providing a comprehensive robotic service covering radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy, nephro-ureterectomy, radical nephrectomy, cystectomy with intra-corporeal reconstruction, and a benign reconstructive service. The post includes a middle grade on call commitment, on a 1 in 7 basis onsite until 20.00, and then offsite overnight, closely supported by the consultant of the week. The successful candidate will work alongside consultants, nurses, ST, CT and FY colleagues, providing care for urology patients within the hospital, including emergencies and referrals from other specialties. This is a fixed term post for 12 months.

The successful candidate will spend an average of two full days per week in our robotic theatres, undertake two surgical oncology outpatient clinics, attend the weekly cancer MDT and have protected time for audit and research activities.

The ability to communicate and work effectively and flexibly as part of a multi-disciplinary team is vital.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with healthcare professional colleagues to provide care of Urological patients.
  • Liaise between nurses, Junior Doctors, patients, relatives and senior medical staff.
  • Attend and participate in ward rounds as timetabled.
  • Take part in rostered out of normal hours emergency work.
  • Maintain continued professional development.
  • Attend educational and multidisciplinary sessions.
  • Undertake audit.
  • Teach medical students.
  • Cooperate with members of the personnel department when monitoring hours of work and other personnel issues.
  • Attend induction.
  • Comply with all local policies including dress code, annual and study leave.

Department

There are 13 consultants, three Specialty Registrars on the Wessex training scheme, three Trust grade doctors (in addition to this post) and one CT grade trainee. There is a large team of highly experienced specialist nurses who deliver the majority of our outpatient cancer diagnostic and follow up service, whilst also providing individualised support to patients throughout their cancer journey. The ward team is supported by four FY1 grade doctors and two Urology ENPs.

The urology department sits within a self-contained suite that includes offices, consulting rooms, TP fusion prostate biopsy, urodynamics, ESWL, intravesical chemotherapy, pre-assessment rooms, and an endoscopy suite providing facilities for flexible cystoscopy (including TULA). The 18 bedded urology ward sits within the surgical floor, adjacent to the surgical high care unit and surgical admissions unit.

In addition to the robotic surgery theatres, there are dedicated urology theatres offering access to modern treatment modalities including Holmium LASER and laparoscopy facilities. Day Surgery takes place within a separate day surgery unit.

The department is supported on site by colleagues in radiology, who offer all major diagnostic facilities and a 24 hour interventional service. The hospital is a designated Cancer Centre, with colleagues in medical and clinical oncology offering comprehensive chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy services.

Research and is strongly encouraged within the unit which has strong links with the University of Portsmouth.
