The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department are looking to an enthusiastic, forward-thinking Consultant in Otolaryngology who has a specialist interest in Otology. This is a substantive replacement post.

Main duties of the job

Join a large team of specialists providing a full range of ENT and Head & Neck surgery.

Undertake general ENT clinics and theatre sessions, including clinics at peripheral sites in Southeast Hampshire, West Sussex and the Isle of Wight.

Required to take part in the Acute ENT on-call rota.

The ENT Department is based within the Head and Neck Care Group, which comprises the Departments of: ENT, Audio-Vestibular Medicine, Audiology, Maxillofacial Surgery and Ophthalmology.

QAH is a large modern acute medical facility with a state-of-the-art ITU, large theatre complex and an on-site Radiotherapy and Oncology centre. The ENT Department provides a full range of emergency and elective ENT services. These include Specialist Otology (including cochlear implantation, bone anchored hearing aids and middle ear prostheses), Specialist Rhinology, Paediatric ENT, Head and Neck Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery and Skull Base Surgery. The Head and Neck Unit is housed on Ward E10. This is a dedicated unit for all Head & Neck inpatients with an ambulatory service for emergency care. There is also a large audiology department and the department benefits from the presence of two Consultants in Audiovestibular Medicine.

The main outpatient department is situated at the QAH site. Peripheral outpatient clinics are undertaken across Southeast Hampshire and West Sussex sites. The post holder may be required to undertake such peripheral clinics. Theatre sessions are all undertaken at the QAH site.

Key Responsibilities:

The post is a replacement substantive post within the ENT department. In addition to being part of the team providing a comprehensive ENT Service, the post is a generalist post with an interest in otology.

The appointee will join a large integrated team providing the full range of ENT services. It is expected that the appointee will be able to develop a further subspecialist interest within otology in the fullness of time.

Clinical arrangements within the department:

The main outpatient department is situated at the QAH site. In addition, clinics are undertaken at peripheral sites in South East Hampshire, West Sussex and the Isle of Wight. It is possible that there will be lists in the Hub in Winchester in the future also. The post holder will be required to undertake such peripheral clinics.

All Consultants take part in the Acute ENT on call rota. Consultants are third on call covering a Specialist Registrar and a trainee Doctor. On call covers a wide area of South East Hampshire and West Sussex. The on-call rota will be approximately a 1 in 8 rota.

The on-call Consultant and Registrar provide cover for post-operative patients and emergencies whilst Consultant colleagues are off site.

Clinical Governance issues, audit, trainee education and training and SpR education and training and Clinical Director responsibilities are undertaken by the Consultants in the department.

There is an academic meeting every Friday afternoon. The first Friday of the month is trainee teaching; the second Friday afternoon consists of an X Ray meeting/consultant talk/path meeting; the third Friday includes a Consultants meeting and Morbidity and Mortality meeting; the fourth Friday is SpR teaching, and the fifth Friday is a Journal Club and Research/Audit meeting. All Consultants take part in supervising these sessions on a rotational basis.
