We are recruiting for Nursery nurses keen to work in
an inpatient setting on both the medical and surgical wards at Queen Alexandra
hospital. We are looking for staff ideally with some hospital background, or a
desire to transfer your skills into that environment. We are looking for Nursery Nurses that want to
be part of a changing service, that want to be involved in what those changes

Main duties of the job
The work of nursery nurses and includes:
- Making sure that children are safe, happy and stimulated.
- Communicating information to children using play.
- Supporting children during clinical procedures.
- Encouraging children's development.
- Using play to maintain a child's level of development during illness.
- Creating a child friendly environment.
- Maintaining toys and play equipment.
- Finding ways to stimulate children particularly those with special and sensory needs.
- Supporting carers in the parenting of their children.
In addition, qualified nursery nurses may:
- Supervise staff.
- Coordinate a programme of activities for children.
- Attend meetings.
- Work with other professionals within and outside the NHS.
- Support children who have been abused.
- Promote public health and parenting.

Job responsibilities
- Work within the Multidisciplinary Team providing and maintaining high standards of care to children and their families from 0-18 years.
- Undertake routine observations, recognising patients needs and responding appropriately and effectively to changes in their clinical condition.
- Provide therapeutic care such as nasogastric tube feeds, low and high flow oxygen therapy and heel prick tests following completion of appropriate training and competencies.
- Organise and manage an allocated independent caseload of patients, reporting to the Senior Nursing Team.
- Ensure the emotional, social, physical, and intellectual needs of every child are met in liaison with other professionals.
- Communicate effectively with children, their families, and members of the Multidisciplinary Team, creating positive and effective relationships aiding effective patient care.
- Maintain clear, accurate and concise patient records maintaining high levels of confidentiality at all times.
- Assist the team in the day to day running of the clinical area, maintaining high levels of safety and care.
- Proactively and positively contribute to the successful overall performance of the Trust by providing patient focused care.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care
- Assist in the admission and discharge process, ensuring children and their families are orientated to the ward.
- Be responsible for the organisation and management of own workload, working within your own limitations and reporting to the Senior Nursing Team.
- Undertake routine observations, recognising patients needs and changes in their condition and responding appropriately and effectively. Assist in the emergency resuscitation of patients as per Portsmouth Hospital University NHS Trust Resuscitation Policy.
- Observe and support children and their families before and after surgery, ensuring their medical and emotional needs are met.
- Provide therapeutic care such as nasogastric tube feeds, low and high flow oxygen therapy and heel prick tests following completion of appropriate training and competencies.
- Support children and their families admitted for review by the Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service; liaising with professionals to ensure a safe discharge.
- Ensure the emotional, social, physical, and intellectual needs of every child are met in liaison with other professionals.
- Ensure the nutritional needs of the child are met, assisting children and their families with healthy and appropriate meal choices.
- Communicate effectively with children and their families.
