services in North Hampshire.
This advertainment is for a WTE post working in
Wessex Kidney Centre covering outpatient services in the Basingstoke area and
inpatient work in the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.
The Wessex Kidney Centre is a busy renal unit with a
catchment area of 2.4 million people and covering all aspects of nephrology, dialysis,
and transplantation. It has a large home dialysis program (both Peritoneal
dialysis and home haemodialysis), 835 patients on dialysis and carries out over
100 transplants per year.
Main duties of the job
The post will cover outpatient clinics (nephrology,
dialysis and long-term transplant follow up) for patients in the Basingstoke
and Andover areas. Nephrology inpatient and on call services will be in Queen Alexandra
Hospital, Portsmouth. The postholder will be involved in nephrology procedures
and in education and training and will work with a variety of multidisciplinary
teams.
The successful applicant can develop their area of interest/expertise
within nephrology across the region. Wessex Kidney Centre has many areas of
outstanding practice, but we welcome the opportunity for further development
and will support the successful applicant in both service and clinical

team to support inpatient acute renal care in Portsmouth and outpatient
nephrology services in North Hampshire.
Nephrology:
WKC are looking to appoint a substantive WTE consultant nephrologist but
would consider locum applicants if preferred. The post holder will be
responsible for outpatient nephrology, dialysis, and transplant services in
Basingstoke and North Hampshire area and inpatient acute renal services at the
Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth (QAH). This post is replacement for
retirement.
The renal service is continually developing subspecialties and a
particular interest or expertise in any field would be desirable and will be
supported.
The service, given its large geographical area, is currently divided by
sub-region (based around each of the 8 satellite acute trusts) with
nephrologist(s) for each area to maintain patient continuity as much as
possible. On-going development and growth has increased renal in-reach ward
services in some of these sites.
WKC physicians
run nephrology and renal replacement (RRT) clinics at all the acute hospital trusts
in the region and RRT clinics at the satellite dialysis units. This post will
take joint responsibility for nephrology and renal replacement therapy,
including nephrology and AKI inpatients.
An
indicative workload for the posts includes shared responsibility for outpatient
clinics covering general nephrology, chronic transplant follow up and satellite
dialysis unit clinics in the North Hampshire area (covering Hampshire Hospitals
NHS trust in Basingstoke) and ward cover at the QAH. Ward cover at QAH is based
on a 1 in 10 rota and includes weekend cover and overnight non-resident cover
supported by are renal registrar and renal SHO.
Time allocated to clinics is 4 hours and will house 8 to 15 patients per
list depending on new/FU and nephrology/RRT breakdown. Clinic slots are
generally 15-20 minutes per nephrology follow-up, 20-30 minutes for a RRT
follow-up and 30 mins per new patient. A standard non-dialysis clinic template
would include 2 new patients and 10 follow up slots; a dialysis template would
include 8 dialysis patients. Within the Wessex Kidney Centre consultants take
joint responsibility for geographical areas within our catchment meaning they
should expect to look after the entire spectrum of nephrology, CKD, and renal
replacement therapy. All patients have a named consultant who has overall
responsibility for their care. The exceptions are peritoneal dialysis, home haemodialysis,
young adult transition, genetic conditions (excluding PKD), acute vasculitis
and acute transplant (first 6 months) which all run as specialist clinics by
specific consultants.
The post is 10 PAs.
The formal job plan would be 8 PA nephrology DCC and 2 SPA, there is no
GIM commitment with this post.
