Job summary

We have opportunities in many of the core medical specialities such as respiratory, gastroenterology, acute and general medicine, elderly care and cardiology but also in renal, oncology and neurology along with the emergency department. Rotations will be organised through a number of specialties, usually in 4 month rotations. All locally employed doctors will have an educational supervisor and Portsmouth Hospitals are committed to providing the same opportunities for locally employed doctors and doctors in training.

We know the importance of supported learning opportunities, and are proud of the encouraging environment that our team cultivates we promise departmental teaching, MDT meetings, grand rounds and journal clubs as well as allocated training days and study leave. We have an excellent record of junior doctors progressing on to formal training programmes.

For doctors new to the NHS an FY2 level post would be offered with a 4 week supernumerary period and introductory teaching. For doctors who have already worked in the NHS and completed FY2 level competencies a Core Level post would be offered.

Main duties of the job

  • Attend daily ward handovers.
  • Work as part of a medical ward team.
  • Work and liaise with a ward multi-disciplinary team.
  • Review ward patients.
  • Perform basic clinical skills.
  • Prescribing.
  • Discharge Planning and Discharge Summaries.
  • Maintaining continued professional development.
  • Complying with local policies and standards including completing mandatory training.
  • Out of hours/on call work (either covering the wards or the acute medical unit admissions).
