Job summary

We have a new, exciting opportunity to join the Palliative and End of Life Care Team at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. Our new Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist/Education Lead post will have a 50% Clinical Nurse Specialist and 50% Palliative Care Education focus. This new role is part of the team expansion (plus band 6 Specialist Nurse/Educator, plus band 6 Specialist Nurse).

Based at Queen Alexandra Hospital Cosham, you will join an established, experienced team. You will contribute to the implementation of the Palliative and End of Life Care Action Plan, including delivery of the clinical service as well as taking responsibility for agreed education aspects of it. You will work closely with colleagues within the Trust as well as the local Integrated Care System multi-professional providers.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a forward thinking, autonomous nurse to join our service. We are looking for an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative and End of Life Care, eager to work in the acute sector, who will also lead education as a major part of their role.

Main duties of the job

You will be a valued member of the team, working as an integral part of the hospital palliative and end of life care team. You will provide specialist palliative care advice and support to people (and their families) affected by life limiting illnesses, those who are at the end of their lives as well as the core teams looking after them.

You will provide expert advice and management for patients (and their families) with life limiting illnesses, to enable timely and effective care and demonstrate a high level of expertise in palliative and end of life care, have the ability to work independently and within a team, as well as teaching, organisation, audit and service development.

You will be a Non-Medical (Independent) Prescriber (Palliative and End of Life Care Specialty), prescribing medicine in line with trust policies and guidelines within professional scope of practice.

Reporting to the Nurse Consultant/Trust Lead for Palliative and End of Life Care and working closely with the Professional Lead, you will contribute to the Palliative and End of Life Care Action Plan, taking responsibility for agreed education aspects of it as well as leadership and line management to the education component of another new post band 6 Specialist Nurse/Educator.

Your post will support a move towards 7 day a week working, during main hours of operation providing specialist palliative and end of life care cover to the hospital at weekends as well as Bank holidays.
