It is a very important role that is crucial in ensuring the effective running of the Pharmacy department!

It is a truly perfect opportunity for a dynamic pharmacy assistant with a Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Support Staff; or equivalent.

Main duties of the job

The Pharmacy Department at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is continually improving to develop the service. The Pharmacy Storekeeper is an integral part of the Pharmacy and Trust team.

This post will support the ordering and receipt of all medication that is used to treat patients at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.

To support the Distribution/Stores manager in ensuring safe and efficient supply of medicines to wards and/or agreed areas

To correctly label and dispense Pharmaceuticals against prescriptions and to participate in other duties that contributes to the smooth running of dispensary

To support the pharmacy and medicines services to patients and other professional healthcare teams

Receive prescriptions and any other pharmaceutical work appropriate to the level of training, knowledge and experience, in order to participate in the safe and effective delivery of pharmacy services across the Trust.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Maintain supplies of pharmaceutical stock by reviewing and manually adjusting orders on the computerised pharmacy stock ordering system as needed. Identifying stock supply/control problems and resolving them in conjunction with the Pharmacy Managers/Leads, whilst communicating problems and progress to the appropriate person as they arise, in order to minimise risk to patient care.

2. Contributing to good pharmaceutical stock control in dispensary and customers department/ward. Participation in stock checks, collection of orders from receipt area, checks for short-dated products, and the medicines return scheme.

3. Contribute to the correct receipt, storage, and rotation of pharmaceutical stock ensuring maintenance of electronic and paper record systems relating to areas above, particularly those for specialist drugs requiring mandatory documentation, e.g. Controlled Drugs etc.

4. Take part in supporting transportation of medicinal goods between external units.

5. Work with pharmacy colleagues in main dispensary, Portsmouth Manufacturing Unit (PMU), Regional Distribution and Procurement Centre (RDPC) and oncology to coordinate medication supply

6. Accurately check stock as per profile for wards, departments, out-of-hours cupboard etc. against agreed stock levels then process order and replenish as necessary.

7. Acts as superuser for dispensary robotics and automated dispensing cabinets and dispensing robots to ensure continuation of services and safe storage of medicines. Ensuring robot maintenance and troubleshooting is actioned appropriately and escalated to the responsible Principal Technician when necessary

8. Provides support and training to all staff members to include Stores rotations and Pharmacy robotics training.

9. Inputs Medical Gas Cylinder information onto nationwide database to report usage figures and partakes in daily stock checks of Trust gas stores.

10. To operate manual handling equipment to off-load or load palletised goods.

11. Contributes to changes in practice and workplace SOPs relating to Stores and Distribution services, to ensure processes and training are up to date and relevant

12. Interpret a wide range of written and electronic prescriptions to accurately label and dispense medicines, in a timely, legal and ethically acceptable manner to meet customer needs

13. Support reception area, receipt of written and electronic prescriptions ensuring they have the legal and local information required to enable staff to process and the ability to use, navigate and interrogate the computerised prescription tracking system to facilitate and record their progress.

14. Assist in the provision of pre-packed pharmaceuticals including emergency drug boxes.

15. Support scheduling pre-planned work by working with all service users.

16. Under the guidance and supervision of senior staff assist in the training of Pharmacy Support Assistants (PSA) and trainees

17. Undertake and maintain training to ensure Compliance to Local, Trust and General Pharmaceutical Council requirements.

18. Contribute to departmental quality monitoring and review of associated documentation to ensure that department, patient and customer expectations/needs are met
