Job summary

Are you a newly qualified Speech and Language therapist looking to complete your NQPs and dysphagia competencies in a general hospital setting, offering a wide range of clinical experiences? Are you a team player?

The Speech and Language Therapy team at Queen Alexandra hospital in Portsmouth are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated newly qualified Speech and Language Therapist, to join our acute therapy team. We offer a highly specialist service to the hospital and always put patient safety and quality at the centre of our care.

You must have a degree or masters qualification in Speech and Language Therapy with current HCPC registration. A positive attitude to team working, commitment to personal development and ability to work efficiently will be an advantage. There are opportunities to develop this role into a Band 6 post for the right candidate.

The successful applicant will receive regular clinical and managerial supervision to support their personal and professional development and will work closely within a supportive team. You will also be supported by our AHP preceptorship course to help you transition into the work environment. The trust offers a range of resilience support to staff and there is a swimming pool on site.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be working in a supportive team of SLTs and alongside a range of multidisciplinary professionals.
  • You will participate in daily triage and prioritisation of the caseload.
  • You will be supported to achieve your NQP competencies.
  • There will be the opportunity to work a range of settings across the hospital as you progress.
  • We will enable you to develop your dysphagia competencies following the RCSLT framework.
  • You will value the importance of training and will have the opportunity to contribute to our comprehensive ward training programmes including dysphagia training safety and CAUK training.
  • You will have a good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act.

  • To be an autonomous practitioner, professionally and legally responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and discharge of the caseload in line with local and national protocols/ policies, RCSLT professional standards and HCPC regulatory Codes of Practice.
  • Following assessment to make decisions about future clinical management and intervention with access to a supervisor for more complex cases and decision making.
  • To provide reports and participate in multidisciplinary assessments.
  • To develop skills in motivating clients and/ or carers to engage in the therapeutic process.
  • To work with other agencies as appropriate to negotiate and agree decision making regarding client management.
