Job summary

Are you looking to pursue or progress a career in pharmacy? Are you interested in training for a new qualification whilst still earning at the sametime? Here at PHUT we are looking for enthusiastic, hard working individuals with organisational and communication skills, to train asPre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians (PTPT) in a nationally approved and recognised apprenticeship.

This is an extensive training programme that will provide you with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience in all aspects of pharmacy services including dispensary, distribution, medicines management, asceptics and procurement. Training is delivered within the workplace by our compassionate and experienced multi-skilled team, ensuring you receive the support you need to qualify as a competent and confident Pharmacy Technician.

By taking on this role you must be prepared to commit to study at home and meet the agreed deadlines for assignments set by the College. You will attend College once a week either on site or via distance learning. In return we will commit to providing you with protected study time and the resources you need to complete the apprenticeship in an inclusive, forward thinking environment.

Completion of the course will enable you to apply for registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Main duties of the job

Main Dispensary

  • You will participate in the labelling and dispensing of prescriptions including controlled drugs.
  • You will work on reception and be able to liaise with a variety of different customers.
  • You will assist with the delivery service ensuring medications reach the patient in a timely manner.
  • You will be expected to help with the general housekeeping of the workplace.
  • You may participate in the training of new staff members.
  • You will learn how to complete the final accuracy check of a prescription during your second year and you will need to embed this knowledge for the duration of the course.You will assist in the TPN service.

Distribution

  • You will work alongside the distribution team to support with ward top-ups and unpacks and be able to communicate effectively with the ward-based staff.
  • You will assist with distribution queries and audits.
  • You will participate in the training of new members of staff.

Medicines Administration

  • You will complete your medicines administration skills assignment on the wards while under the direct supervision of specialist trained members of staff.

Job responsibilities

  • Be proactive in developing own academic, technical, practical and portfolio work in order to achieve competence in all aspects of pharmaceutical work to enable you to register as a qualified Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) at the end of your training placement.
  • Undertake academic and practical work required to achieve the Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians (presented as a level 3 Pharmacy Apprenticeship). Learning is supported with allocated time out and may include day release during your working week.
  • Undertake the recommended hours of self directed study per week outside of working hours to fulfil the curriculum requirements as recommended from the proposed Training provider.
  • Adhere to the GPhC Code of Conduct for Pharmacy Trainees.
  • Apply underpinning knowledge to practice during all rotations.
  • Follow departmental and Trust procedures at all times, whilst working within the limits of this job role and under the supervision of the practice supervisor.
  • Undertake routine CPD (continual professional development) and contribute to in-house training sessions to continually update and improve knowledge and skills
  • Participate in all aspects of dispensing and labelling for in and out patients including controlled drugs, use of the pharmacy robot, extemporaneous compounding and supplying non-stock medicines in a timely, legal and ethically acceptable manner to help the team provide a safe and efficient Pharmacy Service to all patients.
  • Undertaking supervised training in the counselling of patients, and/or providing compliance aids/cards to minimise barriers to concordance and ensure that each patient has sufficient understanding of how to manage their treatment, including to-follow arrangements when necessary.
  • Contributing to good pharmaceutical stock control within the department, pharmacy Robot and wards to include, checking for short dated products, the medicines return scheme,participate in stock-checks and to assist the storekeeper in tracing and resolving any stock discrepancies.
  • Participating in top-up services to designated wards/departments to ensure continued supplies of medicines and resolving or referring medicines related enquiries in accordance with customer needs.
  • Participating in monitoring the quality of services provided, including use of the pharmacy electronic tracking system, to ensure that customer needs are met.
  • Assist with reception area, financial transactions, receipt of written and electronic prescriptions ensuring they have the legal and local information required to enable staff to process and the ability to use, navigate and interrogate the computerised prescription tracking system to facilitate and record their progress.
  • Assist in the provision of prepacked Pharmaceuticals including emergency drug boxes
  • Participate in the maintenance of supplies of Pharmaceutical stock by assisting the Storekeeper to Identify stock supply/control problems and resolving them with the Drug Purchasing Centre, whilst communicating problems and progress to the appropriate person as they arise, in order to minimise risk to patient care.
  • Contribute to the correct receipt, storage, and rotation of pharmacy stocks ensuring maintenance of electronic and paper record systems particularly those for specialist drugs requiring mandatory documentation, e.g. clinical trial material.
  • Treating all customers with courtesy and showing consideration for patients privacy and dignity at all times to ensure that pharmacy is regarded as a professional and caring organisation.
  • Providing services on weekends and bank holidays, when suitably experienced, according to a planned rota to ensure continuity of pharmacy services.
