Job summary

CDU is a 14 bedded ward with 3 cardiac cath labs, which looks after patients who have undergone or are waiting to cardiac procedures such as TOEs, SBCAs, Pacemakers/ICD and PPCIs, it is often fast paced, but with many opportunities to develop your clinical, management and leadership skills.

In return we will ensure you are provided with the support of a very welcoming MDT, Matron and ward team who will support your development.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead and co-ordinate the nursing team, taking continuing responsibility on a 24 hours basis for the management and organisation of the clinical area. This includes some on call working.
  • Through effective leadership ensure the clinical team delivers a safe, effective, responsive, caring and well-led service where compassion is embedded and a positive patient experience is achieved.
  • Provide strong professional clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and act as a professional role model.
  • A highly skilled clinical expert with specialised knowledge in caring for patients and their carer.
  • Be a compassionate leader, who demonstrates and supports staff well-being.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To have overall responsibility for the effective management of the Cardiac catheter lab. In addition the post holder will provide nursing leadership within this area, ensuring an effective quality nursing service, with responsibility for standards of nursing care and patient safety.
  • To provide patients of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust with a Cardiac Catheterisation Service, including angiography, right heart studies, pacemaker and complex pacemaker and defibrillator implantations, direct current cardioversions and transoesophageal ECHOs.
  • Develop protocols and guidelines for the operational issues of the Cardiac Catheter Lab, which includes patient pathway through all ward areas.
  • The post-holder works as an expert practitioner and is responsible for the delivery of patient-focused programmes of care, which address the complex and changing health and well-being needs of the client group in his/her clinical area.
  • The post-holder displays excellent communication and leadership skills and is responsible for the day-to-day line management of the team for which he/she is responsible.
  • He/she is also responsible for standards of cleanliness in the clinical area and for a well-maintained Department environment. Is a budget holder and authorised signatory for financial and physical resources.
  • Responsible for periodic Tendering of Cath lab consumables and managing the stock inventory of all supplies on the Trust stock inventory system.
  • Responsible for the delivery of a seven day, twenty-four hour service for primary angioplasty (PPCI) working closely in conjunction with the cardiac radiographers and cardiac physiologist.
  • To work with Band 7 senior radiographer and manage the day to day on-going operational and supporting strategic requirements of the clinical area, with authority to make decisions as required, keeping the Matron informed as appropriate and escalating issues in a timely fashion if required.

Managerial

  • Manage people and financial resources to ensure the effective operation of the team for which he/she is responsible. Ensure effective skill-mix and appropriate caseload management at all times.
  • Working closely with the administrative team to schedule and plan elective lists and liaising with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Allocate work and assess performance of the team members objectively against set criteria/competencies. Be responsible for ensuring that individual Performance Review and Personal Development Plans are completed for each staff member. Provide clear feedback to team members in a way that is conducive to maintaining and improving performance. Work closely with the Human Resources Department as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate excellent personal communication. Establish and maintain effective two-way communication channels with individuals and groups. Demonstrate appropriate assertiveness and ability to challenge others when the rights of patients and others may be infringed.
  • Be responsible for the standard of nursing care delivered in work area. Display evidence that staff provide holistic, evidence-based, patient-centred care. Demonstrate that patients are involved in both decisions affecting their care and well-being and in service development. Practice in accordance with the professional, ethical and legal codes of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and Trusts protocols and guidelines.
