Job summary
Applications are invited for a temporary band 7 Clinical
Scientist to join our Blood Sciences clinical team at Queen Alexandra Hospital (QAH) in the seafront city of Portsmouth. We
are lucky to be situated close to both the seaside and also beautiful
countryside in the shape of the South Downs.
The QA is the largest district general in the UK with a
specialist renal unit. We are very
fortunate to work in a lab that is housed in a state of the art purpose built
building which brings together all of the Pathology disciplines into one area
and allows free flow of samples and ideas between them.
Portsmouth Hospitals Blood Sciences Department has a
well-equipped and highly automated laboratory, currently using Roche analysers
for the routine biochemistry work. We
also provide the regional screening programme for Fetal Anomaly and Newborn
Bloodspot Screening .
We are looking for a highly motivated individual who can
help us to deliver accurate and timely Biochemistry services for patients and
the staff caring for them.The
successful candidate will be expected to contribute to authorisation of general
biochemistry and endocrinology results, delivery of the regional screening
services, audit, training of junior staff and to participate in a duty
biochemist rota that will involve provision of clinical advice out of
hours. Applicants will be expected to
work towards FRCPath. This post is for
maternity cover and we have 12 months of funding.

- Participate in the Duty Biochemist within hours and out of hours duty roster.
- Support verification and validation of new laboratory methods.

- To assist in the ongoing achievement of departmental quality standards.

To comment and advise clinical staff on wards, outpatients and general practice on the utility, interpretation and diagnostic value of assays performed within Blood Sciences. This is complex information which requires specialist knowledge as it is not well understood by other clinicians.
The post holder will attend relevant ward rounds and MDT meetings when necessary to advise on results of specialist interest.
- Contribute to the clinical validation of general clinical biochemistry results from the laboratory computer and to provide appropriate clinical interpretative comments via data entry.
- Telephone abnormal results on your own initiative and clinically urgent results that are brought to your attention.
- Participate in the Duty Biochemist within hours duty roster.
- After any necessary training, participate, as a Duty Biochemist, in the out of hours Clinical Biochemist duty roster giving advice to the Out of Hours Doctors service on referral of patients to the Emergency Corridor (with back up from Consultant Clinical Biochemists).
- Support verification and validation of new laboratory methods.
- Adapt the existing information systems to allow the collection of audit, research, statistical and financial costing data from the laboratory databases.
- Monitor the quality of performance of the analyses in an area of specialist interest and to implement policies such that performance is maintained and improved where appropriate. Be responsible for the safe use of complex equipment when used.
- Provide initiative and support for clinical audit within the department and develop links externally to enhance multi-disciplinary clinical audits.
- Support change control for new projects and service changes within the department.
- Be actively involved in the initiation, planning and implementation of research and development projects of the department.
- Be actively involved with the in-service training and general education of the trainee Clinical Scientists.
- Participate in the in-house education programme of the department.
- Participate in continuing professional development and keep a record to reflect this.
- Attend courses/seminars/lectures to update knowledge of clinical biochemistry.
- Work towards Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists.
- There is little or no exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances, little requirement for physical effort and occasional exposure to infectious body fluids.
