Job summary
General Medicine is rapidly expanding at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, as the benefit to the patient of having their care guided by a Consultant with an understanding of a multisystem approach is being rediscovered on a national scale. We are seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking Consultant with a passionate interest in contributing to the development of all the facets of what GIM can offer patient care, to join our current consultant team. Due to the size of our catchment area you will be involved in the management of an incredibly wide range of pathologies, developing your skills and providing ample opportunity for service improvement, clinical teaching and research.
Recruitment to these posts will support the ongoing development of General Internal Medicine in Portsmouth including further developing integrated short stay pathways alongside our large Acute Medicine Unit, improving seven-day services and increasing our involvement in research.
In addition to patient care, training is an important part of life within the GIM department. We are lucky to have a large number of trainees from a range of training programmes for whom we provide clinical and educational supervision, assessments and regular teaching sessions. We are also developing our alternative medical workforce with the introduction of Medical Technicians and Advanced Clinical Practitioners.
Main duties of the job
- Sharing in providing the inpatient general medicine service across the trust
- Supervision of trainees, providing advice and reviewing treatment plans
- Participation in education programmes for trainees, medical students, physiotherapists, nursing staff and other specialist staff
- Participation in the clinical governance activities of the department
- Being an active member of the general medicine team, encouraging multi professional working
- Management of the trainees in the firm, providing appraisal and necessary feedback
- Contribution to the overall management of the general medicine service, undertaking projects and programmes of work as delegated by the Clinical Director.
