Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated colleague to join our team of 44 consultants, as a Consultant Radiologist with an interest in thoracic imaging. This new post reflects an increasing cancer imaging workload, demand for imaging guided biopsies, ILD service and to support the expansion of the Targeted Lung Health Check service. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the TLHC reporting, CT guided biopsies and thoracic reporting. We are a dynamic and innovative department, and the applicant will be expected to provide acute and sub speciality imaging. Portsmouth is host to the Portsmouth training scheme, providing training to 20 specialist registrars.

Main duties of the job

  • Subspecialty interest in thoracic imaging, to participate in all aspects of thoracic imaging, Lung cancer health check service, plain film imaging, imaging guided lung/pleural biopsies, interstitial lung disease, MDTs and meetings.
  • General work:
  1. Acute in-patient cross-sectional imaging
  2. On-call service. Currently 1:16
  3. Supported by local Trainees until 2200hrs
  4. Outsourced CT 8-10 hours
  5. Weekend on call working is in and working for between 8-10 hrs, compensated with time in lieu (time and a half). This can be taken within three months of the on-call date.
  • Share with colleagues in the training, supervision, and support of radiographers and ultrasonographers, including skill mix training.
  • Provide training for the Portsmouth Radiology Training Scheme Specialty Trainees and other Southampton based rotating Wessex SPRs.
  • The job comprises 8 direct clinical care (DCC) and 2 supporting programme activities (SPA). One of the SPA sessions can be taken off site. We are happy to support flexible working (eg compressed job plan, four day working, reporting from home (home workstations are provided etc.) Extra DDC PAs may be available following consultation with the Clinical Director, depending on departmental and personal requirements. Regular reviews of job plan with be undertaken.

Cardiothoracic department

This new thoracic post is to join our team of 4 subspecialty radiologists (currently 3 cardiothoracic and 1 thoracic and oncology) for our expanding service. Applicants who have a second subspeciality interest would also be considered e.g., thoracic and oncology, thoracic and head and neck etc.

PHU has a large respiratory department comprising of 16 respiratory consultants with NHS Specialist Commissioned services for severe asthma and ILD. Sub speciality services include COPD, bronchiectasis, pleural diseases, TB, sleep and lung cancer. PHU has the highest number of new lung cancers and mesothelioma diagnoses within the Wessex region and has an established thoracoscopy and endobronchial biopsy (EBUS) services. The Targeted Lung Health Service started in June 2022 for the Portsmouth CCG and in September 2023 this will be expanded to the Gosport and Fareham. The thoracic radiology department provides high numbers of imaging guided biopsies (CT and USS), established lung perfusion CT and dynamic tracheal imaging services. There are several oncologic and non-oncologic MDTs per week and as a specialist centre in ILD there are also regular ILD MDTs. There is an established lung ablation service which is steadily expanding.

  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights
  • Fellowship of Royal College of Radiologists, or equivalent

Desirable

  • Fellowship level training in thoracic imaging
  • BSTI Nodule analysis course
  • Adult cardiac/coronary CT
