Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Head of Advanced Therapies, who will lead the Advanced Therapies Wales (ATW) programme which is responsible for the implementation of the Statement of Intent for Advanced Therapies, published by the Welsh Government in 2019 and which is part of the Precision Medicine portfolio. Its aim is to harness the potential of these innovative therapies to improve the health and wellbeing of people in Wales and to contribute to economic growth.

Working in collaboration with key stakeholders from across health, academia, industry and the third sector, the Head of Advanced Therapies will be responsible for the objectives within the Delivery Plan that is currently being updated and covers the adoption of NICE approved therapies, increasing access to clinical trials, potentiating translational research and how can work with enabler industries and suppliers. Whilst primarily looking at delivery in Wales, the programme requires maintenance of an overview of the sector and organisations across the UK and wider and active engagement with them. The ATW programme is managed by Velindre University NHS Trust and works in close collaboration.

The post is currently offered on a 2 year secondment or fixed term basis, but will be subject to ongoing review. If applying on a secondment basis we request that you obtain approval from your current line manager before applying.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will lead the development, management and delivery of the ATW programme in enabling adoption and RD&I in these rapidly developing therapies, ensuring that the objectives are met in a complex multi-agency, multi-disciplinary environment. This includes longer term strategic plans as well as operational delivery plans.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working arrangements with key stakeholders in the NHS and wider to ensure knowledge and awareness of the ATW programme, its ambition and its intended outcomes and to identify areas of collaboration or where ATW can provide support.
  • Rigorous identification of and management of projects in collaboration with other organisations.
  • Develop and maintain a knowledge of the ATMP sectors to enable the programme of work to continue to develop.
  • Ensure programme governance and adherence to best practice; reporting on performance, risks, financial control, and ensuring effective record keeping.
  • Working under own direction and directing others within confines of Trust policy and informing policy in emerging areas, advising on development as the sector develops. Provide advice to NHS Wales and the Welsh Government.
  • Provide specialist advice to Local Health Boards, Welsh Government, and other public bodies (such as the Life Sciences Hub) to support the development of the sector in Wales in health, education and economic development.
