Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a clinical coder to join our team of specialist oncology coders at Velindre Cancer Centre. This is an opportunity for an experienced clinical coder to specialise in oncology coding and work within a forward thinking environment where the coders use digital documentation.

We are seeking an accredited / experienced clinical coder but would also consider a band 3 trainee clinical coder who will work towards accreditation.

Velindre University NHS Trust has a small and friendly team of clinical coders who provide an increasingly high profile role within business intelligence. The department is responsible for translating medical terminology into coded clinical data using international classifications. The accurate, consistent and timely production of this data supports many uses, including commissioning, audit, service planning and resource allocation.

The role offers an opportunity for partial home working alongside onsite working on a rotational basis.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Coding Department at Velindre is responsible for the accurate and timely recording of clinical data to support the Trusts clinical and business requirements and for regional and National Health Service statistics.

The post holder will be required to work as a member of a team to provide an efficient clinical coding service working to established systems and procedures.

The department specialises in oncology cases and the post holder will be expected to develop in depth coding skills in relation to cancer and oncology treatments.

Electronic clinical systems are the main source of documentation used and the post holder will be expected to analyse complex information; apply independent judgement in the interpretation, transposition and sequencing of clinical data adhering to national rules and conventions.

The role is both challenging and rewarding and provides a vital service to the Trust.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in clinical coding, have good interpersonal and communication skills, be highly organised and have the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
