Job summary

Applications are invited for two posts in the Urology department at the Royal Devon and Exeter Foundation NHS Trust. One post will be a Clinical Research Fellow post and one Clinical Fellow post. The posts will commence in August 2025.

The posts would suit candidates with the MRCS (or equivalent) and at least 6 months urological experience who wish to obtain further urology registrar level experience prior to national selection for an ST3 post. The posts will enable the candidate to improve their portfolio in preparation for a urology national training number (NTN).

Post holders will be provided with supervised inpatient and day case operating sessions to further their training and career. There will be outpatient and diagnostics to deliver with consultant supervision. The unit has dedicated Urology Investigation Unit based in Ottery St Mary hospital with a wide breadth of diagnostics and outpatient clinics.

There is a non-resident on-call commitment in urology at registrar level, which is currently a 1 in 10 rota with a hot week model. This will be based in Exeter with phone advice to North Devon and Torbay hospitals. The on call is supported by a hot week consultant at all times. The appointee will have compensatory time off following on-call duties.

The appointee will undertake administrative duties associated with the running of his/her clinical work with a named consultant for advice and supervision.

The appointee will be expected to take part in clinical audit and quality assessment activities in addition to their clinical commitments. They will be encouraged and supported to present their projects nationally and internationally.

The department provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic and operative urological procedures including core urology, endourology and core paediatric urology. Exeter is a major centre for robotic urological surgery and a regional tertiary referral centre for urological oncology, in particular for pelvic surgery and nephron-sparing surgery.

Clinically, both post holders will have responsibilities to provide

  1. Flexible cystoscopy/haematuria lists in the endoscopy department.
  2. Telephone and/or face to face out-patient clinics
  3. On-call activity with a 1 in 10 frequency. The on call will involve supporting the on-call consultant urologist with: ward work, inpatient referrals.
  4. There will be the opportunity to attend inpatient and day case theatre sessions with the consultants where possible to gain experience.

For the research post, the post holder will have opportunity to:

  1. Be involved in several research projects
  2. Actively participate in departmental audit/s
  3. Actively participate in teaching and supporting the Foundation School trainees and Medical Students attached to the department.
  4. Actively support the other registrars and fellows in the department to arrange and support a teaching rota for medical students and junior doctors.
  5. Be involved in recruitment to national clinical trials

Working Pattern: 40 hours per week plus on call activity
