Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Public Health Nursing Team for a Band 3 School Nurse Assistant to join our National Childhood Measurement Programme (NCMP) Team

This post will be for up to 32 hours a week. You will be joining a busy and motivated team who work across Southampton in Primary Schools and community settings to;

Support the implementation of associated screening assessments as identified in the Healthy Child Programme, including documentation.

Support the planning and delivery of the NCMP (National Child Measurement Programme) to children in both Reception and Year 6, in line with local and national guidance

Support the planning and delivery of hearing and vision screening to reception aged school children

Full training will be given for this post. Successful candidates should have good communication skills and be able to work independently and in a team. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their suitability for working with Children and have an NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or be prepared to work towards one. You will need to have a full driving licence and access to a car to travel around the city.

Main duties of the job

  • To work with the Southampton 5- 19 Public Health Nursing Team in promoting good health in school age children through delivery of the National Childhood Measurement Programme and Vision and Hearing Screening.
  • To promote good health when in contact with young people, parents, and school staff.
  • To undertake screening and assessment of growth parameters, hearing, and vision, with follow ups of those children identified with health problems. To report and refer as necessary to other agencies, including Audiology clinic, orthoptist, and optician.
  • To be aware of the signs of child abuse and children in need and adhere to Solent Child Protection Procedures
  • To maintain up to date clinical knowledge within own sphere of competence.
  • To liaise with parents and school as required. This includes families of multi-cultural background

About us

We have been working with other local NHS Trusts to create a new organisation, bringing together all community, mental health and learning disability services from across Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Subject to approvals, the aim is for the new Trust to be formed by the end of 2024.

Project Fusion is the name for the programme to create the new combined NHS Foundation Trust. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust will be bringing the services into a single organisation will result in more consistent care, more equitable access to services irrespective of postcode, and a more sustainable workforce and services. The new organisation will operate locally to ensure services can best meet the needs of different communities.

The new Trust will be comprised of all the services currently provided by Solent NHS Trust and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, the community, mental health and learning disability services provided by Isle of Wight NHS Trust and child and adolescent mental health services delivered in parts of Hampshire by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Colleagues will transfer to the new organisation under Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) -- known as TUPE on the day the trust is formed. TUPE is a legal process to ensure you transfer out of one organisation and into another, maintaining the terms and conditions of your employment.
