Job summary

This post in the community paediatric team has been created following the retirement of one of our existing consultants. The appointee will be responsible for leading the department in providing neurodevelopmental clinics in the New Forest, with responsibility for a special school covering a wide range of disabilities in children aged 3-19. The post also involves a contribution to the teaching of undergraduate medical students; the supervision of trainees and specialty doctors, lead for postgraduate education; and a contribution to the acute child protection rota for physical and sexual abuse. The exact job plan is negotiable to meet the needs of the department and the skills of the appointee.

The service provides clinics for children referred because of developmental or educational concerns, special school clinics, general paediatric clinics in Southampton City, statutory health assessments for Looked After Children and a child protection medical service seeing children referred because of concerns of neglect, physical and sexual abuse. There are also opportunities for undergraduate medical student teaching, quality improvement projects and involvement with research.

All posts are based in office hours, with a pay supplement to reflect availability until 7pm when on call for child protection. There is no night or weekend working. Although this post is full time, we would consider applications from those wishing to work part time, for a minimum of 6 PAs/sessions per week.

  • Depending on previous experience and special interests, there may be opportunities to deliver multidisciplinary feeding clinics, continence clinics, Looked After Children's clinics or general paediatric outpatient clinics.
