Job summary
The Public Health Nursing (School Nursing) Service in Southampton is looking for Band 5 nurses to join our team to deliver the healthy child programme to children and their families in the city. We welcome applications from all Registered Nurses, Adult, Child, Mental Health, Learning Disabilities, and Registered Midwives.
We are looking for motivated practitioners to support the Public Health Nursing Service in Solent NHS Trust. You will be working with us to promote health and wellbeing for children & young people aged 5-16 years and their families in a range of community settings including schools. The Healthy Child Programme (5-16) focuses on school aged children and young people up to the age of 16 years and our service delivers this to those in mainstream education and who are in home education. Ability to travel to and work in different settings is essential.
Ideal, but not essential, experience will be having worked in school nursing services previously and experience in offering a range of health and development reviews, screening tests, immunisations, health promotion guidance and tailored support for children and families, with additional support when they need it.
We are passionate about staff development, and we would be supportive for the right candidate to undertake the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) course in School Nursing which is offered in Solent NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job
- Use up to date knowledge & evidence to assess, plan, deliver & evaluate care, communicate findings, influence changes, promote health & best practice
- Make person centred, evidence-based judgements in partnership with others involved in the care process to ensure high quality care
- Undertake risk assessments using approved documents & tools. Use agreed patient protocols, SOP's & clinical guidelines which reference actions in accordance with risk assessment outcomes
- Plan & organise own & others workload, delegate appropriately & monitor effectiveness of care delivered. Ensure collaborating with people, patients, families, carers & multi-disciplinary teams
- Work independently within own competency level to undertake specific interventions & treatments, recognising own limits & appropriately request supervision of Registered Practitioners to ensure delivery of safe, high quality care
- Achieve & maintain competence in mandatory training, develop & maintain clinical competencies, skills & knowledge which relate to area of clinical practice
- Deliver & coordinate clinical & therapeutic care to patient caseload as delegated by the Registered Nurse
- Ensure person centred interventions; delivered compassionately & with dignity
- Respond to patients', relative & carers' concerns as they arise & take remedial action as required & escalate appropriately
About us
We have been working with other local NHS Trusts to create a new organisation, bringing together all community, mental health and learning disability services from across Hampshire and Isle of Wight. Subject to approvals, the aim is for the new Trust to be formed by the end of 2024.
Project Fusion is the name for the programme to create the new combined NHS Foundation Trust. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust will be bringing the services into a single organisation will result in more consistent care, more equitable access to services irrespective of postcode, and a more sustainable workforce and services. The new organisation will operate locally to ensure services can best meet the needs of different communities.
The new Trust will be comprised of all the services currently provided by Solent NHS Trust and Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, the community, mental health and learning disability services provided by Isle of Wight NHS Trust and child and adolescent mental health services delivered in parts of Hampshire by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Colleagues will transfer to the new organisation under Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) -- known as TUPE on the day the trust is formed. TUPE is a legal process to ensure you transfer out of one organisation and into another, maintaining the terms and conditions of your employment.
