Solent's Podiatry Service are looking for you!

If you're an HCPC registered Podiatrist looking to develop your skills further as a specialist Podiatrist or wanting to join an NHS Podiatry service, we want to hear from you! Our East Team works across Portsmouth City, Fareham, Gosport and East Hampshire.

Main duties of the job

Clinically we are looking for specialist podiatrists with the ability to demonstrate a high level of expertise and knowledge to support the following areas of our service: 'At Risk foot', MSK & Nail surgery. Your role will involve the provision of expert specialist assessment, treatment and advice for patients with acute, complex or chronic foot disease affecting the foot and ankle.

We are fortunate to have 2 key multi-chair sites at the Adelaide Health Centre in Southampton and the St Mary's Community Health Campus in Portsmouth. These are both high specification sites with various services offering care delivery. We also provide care in health centres across the area and within people's homes.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The following clinical competencies are applicable to this post and require the employee to provide clinical interventions using highly developed intricate clinical skills and prolonged concentration. The post holder will be able to demonstrate competencies in their role including:

1.0 Assess patients (adults & children) with foot health pathology including those with systemic disease (e.g. diabetes, vascular, systemic inflammatory disorders) to maximise improvement through high levels of technical skill and behaviour change management gained by additional study and/or qualification. To work autonomously from referral to discharge

1.1 To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, co-ordination and palpatory sensory skills for assessment and treatment. To demonstrate physical ability to carry out assessment and treatment

1.2 To work closely with the Podiatry team and other Health Care Professionals to ensure the appropriate management of patients referred for podiatry assessment

1.3 To perform appropriate podiatric assessments and surgical assessment of patients who may have complex physical /psychosocial issues

1.4 Assess lifestyle choices and provide Public Health brief intervention when required. Signpost patients ready for behaviour change to relevant specialist public health services.

1.5 Be responsible for their own caseload, working autonomously to provide highly specialist assessment, diagnosis and management plans for acute and chronic conditions of the foot, ankle and related structures including wound care.

1.6 Identify the need for, and provision of a range of off-loading strategies including:

* Appropriate chair side device

* Taping and silicone devices

* Adaptive insoles to off load

* Slipper casts

* Below knee casts

1.7 Demonstrate competence in the assessment of a patients physical status to include history taking, observational skills and specific and validated tests including vascular, neurological, musculo-skeletal

1.8 Employ radiological investigations (plain x-ray, ultrasound) where appropriate in the context of the patient diagnosis and management plan

1.9 Undertake wound assessment with consideration of the patients social, psychological and systemic status leading to the development of management plans consistent with current best evidence and in keeping with national guidelines

1.10 Instigate microbiological investigations where appropriate demonstrating competency in the acquisition of material and interpretation of results. Where necessary employing therapeutic interventions directly or indirectly through inter-disciplinary working

1.11 Instigate clinical care plans for complex wounds employing advanced clinical techniques including but not limited to:

i. Cold debridement techniques

ii. Advanced wound care therapy (versajet / Larval therapy)

iii. Topical negative pressure

iv. Application of antimicrobial therapy

v. Systemic disease management through inter-professional liaison

1.12 Demonstrate knowledge, safe and effective use of local anaesthetic drugs including

i. Digital block

ii. Local infiltration

1.13 Employ, with the individuals limits of scope of practice, pharmacological agents where appropriate

1.14 Identify the need for and undertake minor nail procedure including:

i. Partial nail ablation (phenol)

ii. Total nail ablation (phenol)

1.15 Identify the need for and undertake minor dermatological in line with level of competence and training
