Job summary

Treetops SARC provides support, advice and forensic examination services for people who have experienced rape or sexual assault throughout Hampshire and the IOW. We are based in Cosham, Portsmouth and open 365 days a year, staffed by on-call crisis workers and sexual offences examiners.

We are looking for a Crisis Worker to join a small team of forensic physicians, Crisis Workers and support workers delivering high standards of care to people who have recently experienced rape or sexual assault.

You will:

  • Provide support and crisis management to people who have recently experienced rape of sexual assault
  • Support the triage system for clients requiring a forensic medical examination
  • Participate in the 6 week rolling rota, which includes working two Saturday and two Sundays per month
  • Support on call cover to ensure appropriate cover for a 24/7 service, including working at least two twilight shifts and two-night shifts per week
  • Attend SARC Base, Treetops Centre, within 60 minutes of being called by the police
  • Offer telephone support and information, as part of the 24/7 rota.

We are looking for someone who communicates with a high degree of empathy and is able to work with highly complex, sensitive information about emotive issues. To have a good understanding of issues relating to rape and sexual assault and to have an organised and methodical approach to work. In return, we provide a comprehensive induction and training plan and are committed to supporting continuous personal development.

Main duties of the job

To provide support and crisis management to individuals who have recently experienced rape or sexual assault and who may or may not wish to report to the police. To support the triage systems for client requiring a forensic medical examination. If called out of hours, to offer appointments via the electronic diary system. To attend the SARC base, The Treetops Centre, within 60 minutes of being called by the Police, unless an appointment has been arranged. To support on call cover to ensure appropriate cover for a 24/7 service, including working at least two twilight shifts and two night shifts per week. The role will participate in the six week rolling rota, which will include working two Saturdays and two Sundays per month.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide support and crisis management to individuals who have recently experienced rape or sexual assault and who may or may not wish to report to the police.
  • To provide telephone support and information, as part of the 24/7 rota.
  • To liaise with the police and forensic physician on behalf of the client, with the clients consent and adhering to confidentiality policy in relation to release of information.
  • To work as part of a small team of forensic physicians, crisis workers and support workers in the delivery of high standards of service.
  • To undertake forensic cleaning in accordance with protocols and ensure sufficient stock in the medical room as required.
  • To participate in regular supervision.
  • To participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of services.
  • To adhere to all Trust and local policies.
  • To consider Child Protection issues and liaise with the SARC Manager and Young Persons ISVA in accordance with child protection policies.
  • To exercise advocacy and professional skills in relation to confidential information. To use analytical skills and informed professional judgement in relation to decision relating to child protection or public safety.
  • To be flexible and comply with the needs of the service. To encourage all staff to lead by example in their individual roles.

  • To record and update spreadsheets for internal procedures, including feedback and complaints processes, laundry, clothing supplies etc.
  • Act as a mentor and resource person for new crisis workers encouraging a high level of motivation in all involved.
  • Ensure a conductive learning environment to support the education and learning of all staff.
  • Contribute to the development of staff, supporting teaching or practical skills to agreed competency level for staff as identified in service plans.
  • To develop and maintain knowledge and skills relevant to this area of work which meet the needs of the organisation, client group and sexual offence legislation.
  • To participate in local induction programme and to deliver induction to new staff.
  • Identify own personal and professional development needs and to keep abreast of best practice in relation to sexual assault.
  • Identifies situations of clinical risk and takes appropriate action to ensure a safe environment for patients, clients, families and staff.

  • Demonstrates commitment to quality improvements, risk management and resource utilisation participating in monitoring and evaluation activities including audit and research activities.
