Main duties of the job
Provision of dental care to those groups specified in the Service Description, both as regular patients of the Special Care Dentistry Service, and for those accessing Specialist Occasional Care Services.
Dental care will include a full range of dental treatment including treatment under sedation and General Anaesthesia and domiciliary care as required. Treatment and care will be within the competencies of a Band B dentist as defined in the National Terms and Conditions of Service.

Job responsibilities
Patient examination and diagnosis
Undertake thorough clinical examination of patients, carry out special investigations including appropriate radiographs and provide a Dental Care Assessment.
Treatment planning and patient management
Plan and manage where there are complex medical co-morbidities, or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and/or carers to resolve complex patient management issues in line with clinical competencies of a Band B Dentist.
Clinical duties in relation to comprehensive dental screening, survey, and treatment services, including emergency treatment, for patients requiring Special Care Dentistry and Specialist Occasional Care. Duties may vary with time to meet changing needs. Dental care may be provided from a variety of clinic premises, including mobile clinics, and may involve domiciliary visits where appropriate. Provision of care or for patients including bariatric patients, using a wheelchair recliner or a hoist.
Health promotion and disease prevention
Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate programmes to prevent disease and promote health in target groups within the population. Promote oral health and preventive dental care liaising with the Oral Health Promotion Team. Assisting in planning and provision of oral health promotion programmes as required. Provision of advice on oral hygiene and peri-operative care and personal care associated with dental procedures. Provision of lifestyle behaviour change, brief interventions and support (e.g. Smoking Cessation).
Medical and dental emergencies
Identify commonly occurring medical emergencies and lead the dental team in the appropriate first line management of the emergency, using appropriate techniques, equipment and drugs. Keep up to date with developments in this area and be able to advise other members of the team. Take responsibility for organising the training and resources for the acute management of medical emergencies within immediate team and / or a part of the service.
Anaesthesia and pain control
Use appropriate local anaesthetic and patient management approaches to control pain and anxiety during dental treatment. This includes planning and implementation of various conscious sedation and general anaesthetic procedures where required. Contribute to training and supervision in support of the availability of sedation and specified treatment under general anaesthesia.
Periodontal therapy and management of soft tissue
Undertake the diagnosis, selection of appropriate periodontal techniques and delivery of periodontal care in an effective way.
Hard and soft tissue surgery
Routine exodontia and/or simple surgical exodontias.
Non- surgical management of the hard tissues of the head and neck
Undertake appropriate assessment of patients to determine the need for specialist advice.
Management of the developing dentition
Undertake appropriate investigations during the patient examination to determine the need for specialist advice in the developing dentition.
Restoration and replacement of teeth
Undertake the diagnosis, selection of appropriate restorative technique and delivery of restoration or replacement of teeth in an effective way. Undertake a range of restorative techniques utilising developed skill resulting in more efficient delivery of restorative care.
