Job summary

The ideal career opportunity for a doctor awaiting entry into a specialist training programme. The post will suit a Junior Doctor at a post Foundation Year 2 level and who has an interest in quality medical education, and specifically immersive simulation.

The primary duty of the post holder is to support the delivery of the trusts postgraduate immersive medical and surgical immersive simulation programmes.

The post holder may also support as required some of the delivery of the undergraduate medical student simulation core curriculum programmes, in order to gain an understanding of these processes and how they differ educationally from postgraduate workstreams.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the day to day running of the immersive Simulation service and will be expected to deliver multiple simulation sessions and programmes across the wider trust.

They will work with the Clinical Education leads to audit, develop and improve both the resident doctors teaching programmes and the medical students and their opportunities for simulation. It is expected that the post holder/s will undertake prescribed training in quality medical education and undertake a research project into an aspect of simulation and medical education, inclusive of integrated Human factors whilst within the post.

The post holder will meet and support core stakeholders within the Trust with regard to the delivery of Simulation, as agreed with the Head of Clinical Education for the Trust.

The use of immersive Simulation as an educational modality is continuously expanding and has proven to be beneficial in developing both technical and non-technical skills. Simulation Based Education is also an excellent opportunity to promote human factors and encourage staff to apply human factors and ergonomics science to their clinical work. The multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary nature of simulation training means that it does not fit into defined medical, nursing or allied health professional established forums but crosses into all of these and to achieve this it is important the Trust has a coordinated simulation strategy to maximise clinical benefit and underpin patient safety.

It is expected that the post holder's time will be given over to their Clinical educational responsibilities which will include:

Delivery of Simulation and training programs

*To support the delivery of an annual programme of work in conjunction with the Lead educator- Clinical Skills and Simulation

*To support the safe delivery of all aspects of the courses including health and safety, consent, co-ordination and management of course faculty, learner experience and course evaluation.

*To develop scenarios/materials, while ensuring that the content is relevant, up to date, and meets the appropriate curricula's/needs of participants; using current applicable multi professional simulation/skills based training methodologies.

*The post holder will work towards actively leading the delivery of simulation programmes; of which the provision of debrief post scenario is integral. Ensuring human factors as well as technical skills are reviewed during these debrief processes.

*Actively participate in the setup and close down of teaching sessions prior and post -events and other related training sessions (simulation equipment, clinical skills, furniture, and audio visual equipment).

*Role model to maintain training areas in a tidy and safe, and educationally conducive state ensuring that disposable items, sharps bins and clinical waste disposal bins are utilised appropriately as required by all learners.

*Ensure the clear communication of required repairs and maintenance of simulation equipment, ensuring equipment is kept in a clean and presentable state for future users from programmes they are involved in.

*The post holder will enable and actively encourage inter- professional approaches to immersive simulation across the Trust.

*Reporting of faults with equipment, furniture, fixtures and fittings to the technical team within each centre.

*To liaise with the Postgraduate Medical Education administrators who will provide support to facilitate the smooth administration of the medical simulation training programmes to include publicity, registration, and course feedback, for simulation activities they are involved with.

*To engage with the clinical education dept 'Digital Agenda' and its dedicated programmes of activity.
