Job summary

The Clinical Health Psychology Service provides specialist psychological assessments and interventions for patients, and consultancy to colleagues in a number of Physical Health specialities provided by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust from their sites at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Good Hope Hospital, Solihull Hospital and Heartlands Hospital. At present this service is provided by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust and colleagues and direct reports of the post holder are expected to TUPE over to University Hospital Birmingham employment in a supported and collaborative process by 1st April 2026.

We are seeking a compassionate, enthusiastic and committed Consultant Clinical Psychologist to join our service to help further develop the services as the Lead Consultant for Clinical Health Psychology.

The successful applicant will have responsibility for a small clinical caseload within their field, leading and developing existing Psychology services for patients affected by a wide range of conditions and advising services about business cases for psychological needs of their patient group. They will be able to draw upon professional leadership and continuing professional development support within initially Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Trust and subsequently UHB.

University of Birmingham and their Clinical Psychology Doctorate Course regularly support trainee doctorate placements within the service.

Main duties of the job

This role will involve responsibility to lead and develop a range of inpatient and outpatient Clinical Health Psychology services, alongside the Consultant Clinical Psychologist for Cancer Services and the Consultant Lead for Clinical Neuropsychology.

There are significant opportunities within UHB to develop and expand the Clinical Health Psychology services to additional sub-specialties, and the successful applicant will also have the support of the new Director of Psychology postholder and a dedicated Clinical Service Manager in addition to corporate services to develop business cases as requested.

With close links to local universities, our department prides itself in a rich history of teaching and research, we also enjoy supervising Assistant Psychologists and Trainee Clinical Psychologists as they progress through their careers in Clinical Psychology.
