University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Physician in General Medicine

The closing date is 03 February 2026

Job summary

We are looking for new enthusiastic Consultant Physicians who have a passion to deliver excellent care to patients at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. Effective management of the acute, unselected medical workload is a major priority for the Trust and we are looking to recruit consultants who will help us to deliver high quality care by working within and alongside the existing Acute and General Medicine team.

General Medicine at Heartlands hospital occupies a large footprint with 3 general medical wards. Ensuring high-quality holistic care is delivered to these patients, with a wide range of pathologies, is a major priority for the site. General medicine works closely with acute medicine which includes a medical assessment unit, medical SDEC and in-reach to ED. Our current consultant staff includes those working only in acute or general medicine, and some with other specialty commitments, for example in Endocrinology or Infectious Diseases.

Physicians accredited in General (Internal) Medicine, Acute Medicine or dual accredited in another speciality are encouraged and welcomed to apply.

These are 10PA jobs and will be personalised to the successful candidate. Less than full time job plans can be accommodated. Appointees must have necessary qualifications and should either be on the Specialist Register of the GMC or be within 6 months of the CCT at the time of interview. Opportunities for teaching are available in our simulation suite and clinical skills area.

Main duties of the job

Our General Medical Consultants are responsible for:

Shared ward rounds of the acute medicine footprint.

Assessment of new patients on the ward.

Providing clinical leadership to the ward team.

Weekend cover is included on a 1:6 basis; this will be pro-rata if less than full time.

All consultants in the department are managerially accountable through the Clinical Service Leads to the CDG Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Directorate.

The successful candidates will provide necessary educational and clinical supervision for junior doctors and other health professionals working in their team. In addition, participation in the departmental and Trust-wide teaching programmes for the relevant junior medical staff and members of the multidisciplinary teams is expected

We have a thriving educational programme, including simulation and ultrasound training, peer-led resident teaching; specialty seminars and constructive M & M meetings. Bedside teaching is expected on most routine ward rounds. We especially welcome applicants with an interest in medical education and a commitment to fostering a good learning environment.

These posts would appeal to both established Consultants with experience and new consultants
