Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is seeking a Consultant Anaesthetist to join its progressive anaesthesia department. Our surgical specialties, include complex areas like neurosurgery, cardiothoracic, hepatobiliary surgery, and Europes largest solid organ transplant program. The role also involves pre-operative care, regional anaesthesia, and the Enhanced Postoperative Care Unit.

As a Level 1 Trauma Centre, the hospital is renowned for trauma and combat injury care. The department, consisting of over 100 consultants, offers strong educational support, opportunities for research, and involvement in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in collaboration with Birmingham and Aston universities. Main duties of the job

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is seeking a Consultant Anaesthetist (General Duties) to join its tertiary and quaternary-level care team. The role involves delivering anaesthetic and perioperative services across various specialties, including general surgery, trauma, plastics, ENT, maxillofacial, interventional radiology, urology, and gynaecology. The position comprises 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), with flexibility in allocation to uncovered lists and consultant leave cover.

The successful applicant will join the General On-call rota, covering Emergency Theatres and the out-of-hours Thrombectomy Service, currently with a 1 in 10 frequency. Active involvement in teaching and training of junior doctors and medical students is expected, fostering a supportive learning environment.

The Trust emphasizes high clinical standards through regular appraisals, audits, and participation in departmental and specialty reviews. The post holder must understand the significant ongoing changes in the Trusts services and be prepared to take an active part in the change program.

We have included a suggested job plan in Appendix 1, but the successful candidate will be invited to discuss these options with the Specialty and Departmental CSLs on appointment.

Teaching & Training

The successful applicant would be expected to have an active interest in education. Our registrar anaesthetic training has recently been adapted to reflect the new RCOA Anaesthesia curriculum. We have recently invited applications for candidates wishing to pursue a CESR pathway. Training is coordinated by the specialty education leads but involves informal and formal teaching by all consultants. There is also a departmental programme of teaching mapped to RCOA examination requirements which is co-ordinated by the resident anaesthetic staff with support from consultants.

UHB has an obligation to teach medical students and a commitment to the Birmingham and Warwickshire Schools of Anaesthesia. Involvement in structured teaching and lecturing to both these groups will be expected. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply for the post of Honorary Senior Lecturer in the University department of Medical Sciences.
