The department of General Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) is seeking an enthusiastic Consultant in Emergency General Surgery with an interest in either Upper or Lower GI. We are excited to invite applications for a Consultant in Emergency General Surgery with an interest in either Upper or Lower GI surgery. The CDG9A General Surgery directorate is based at the Queen Elizabeth site. The directorate also includes a mix of Upper GI, Lower GI and Sarcoma Consultants based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The resident doctor team includes Specialist Registrars, senior clinical fellows and various resident doctors.
This is an exciting time for the service. With the multi-million pound development of our Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility, there are major opportunities to fundamentally redesign our pathways. The post-holder will support the delivery of this service alongside ACPs and resident doctors. They will help us to refine our pathways to ensure our care is as safe and effective as possible, as well as providing a high-quality patient experience.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service and will take a full part in the emergency on call rota in concert with the other General Surgical Consultants.

*Wide experience in general surgery (upper GI and lower GI surgery).

KEY SKILLS & RESPONSIBILITES
There are up to two on call rotas. There is the emergency on call rota at the QE based on two consultants being on call at a time and sharing the nights. On call is Monday to Thursday, and the Friday to Sunday the following weekend. There is no elective work scheduled when on call and the Friday to Monday after the weekday on call is scheduled as a day off (after the morning handover).
For those with a Lower GI interest there may be another on call at Solihull Hospital around the elective patients on that site. This is Monday to Sunday and is shared by all of the colorectal consultants at the two main hospital sites.
To participate in postgraduate and undergraduate medical teaching and to the training and development of all members of the multidisciplinary team.
To participate in the training and supervision of all Specialist, foundation, and core trainees under your responsibility
To participate in regular clinical audit
To ensure that clinical services are efficiently administered
To maintain CPD
To participate actively in clinical governance
To develop audit / research interests within the resources available
The post holders will be required to undertake any other duties and responsibilities that fall within the broad framework of the post.
As this is a post in a developing Trust structure, the role will be reviewed from time to time and the post holder is expected to respond flexibly to develop this and/or other roles to enable the trust to meet differing priorities.
