Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Ophthalmologist, Specialist Interest Medical Retina and Uveitis. The post is a 12 month fixed term post, with a view to becoming substantive.
This post will be based at Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital, which provide Ophthalmology outpatient facilities; including injections and lasers and day case ambulatory surgery.
There are 15 consultants who provide an outpatient and surgical service. The entire range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics are provided and there is close communication with consultants in other specialities. As well as consultant ophthalmologists the eye service is supported by staff and specialist doctors, Specialty Registrars, an Orthoptic Department, Optometrists and imaging technicians, clinical nurse specialists as well as nurses. Pre-operative assessments and Biometry are done on site as well as fundus fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography with ultra-wide field Optos imaging, Optical coherence tomography, corneal topography, Heidelberg retinal tomography as well as ocular ultrasound and UBM.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate is expected to have a minimum of 4 years post-graduate training in general ophthalmology and in addition have further training and experience in managing medical retina patients. The applicant is expected to have a good understanding of medical retina and be capable of managing routine, acute and complex medical retina cases. The applicant should also be able to undertake all retinal laser treatment (focal, PRP) and be independent in performing intravitreal injections. Candidate is expected to diagnose and manage low complex uveitis cases and support the uveitis service also. A special interest in uveitis is desirable. Experience in cataract surgery is also essential but not mandatory. Knowledge of management of general ophthalmology conditions, both acute and chronic, is expected to a standard of that required to gain CCT or equivalent in ophthalmology. Candidates are expected to support medical retina service by training and supervising AHP injectors and virtual reviewers.
In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in audit and governance activities and research clinics.

A high level of organisational skill, good time-management and ability to appropriately triage complex cases and prioritise management as well as follow-up is also required.
This post is to support the Uveitis (Ophthalmology) service and the post holder will be expected to fulfil the following duties;
1.25 PAs -- Cataract theatre
5.5 PAs -- Specialised medical retina/uveitis clinics; including laser and injection clinics
1 PA -- General Clinic
2 PAs - admin/study/research/Revalidation
Clinical sessions deemed clinical activities are 4 hours each clinic PA.
The appointee will be expected to participate in all aspects of clinical governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.
The successful appointee will be expected to participate in 8 clinical sessions including clinics, inpatient ward reviews as required, triaging and managing patient-initiated follow-ups/PIFU and referrals via the CNS and attend regional as well as national medical retina/uveitis meetings. There are two sessions of postgraduate education, and the expectation is that these will be used for either education or research. A degree of flexibility for these sessions is built into the timetable and the successful appointee will be expected to work flexibly.
