Job summary

We invite applications for an exciting Consultant Neonatologist post at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH), part of University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB). The post is to start from 05.1.2026. Subspecialty interest in echocardiography/ cardiology will be desirable.

The Neonatal Unit at Heartlands is a designated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within the West Midlands Perinatal Network (WMPN) and provides medical care for babies of all gestations and is the designated Cooling centre for the Network. There are over 6500 deliveries each year on site, but we aim to provide the intensive and high dependency care required by all of the 10,000 babies born within the trust each year.

Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, located in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham, was built in 1895 and has provision for all aspects of acute hospital care, including several designated regional specialities such as adult renal dialysis, infectious disease and thoracic surgery. It also provides regional Infectious Disease & HIV services. The Regional Virology & Immunology Laboratories are also on site, together with the Public Health Laboratory Services.

The Neonatal Unit at Heartlands is a designated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within the West Midlands Perinatal Network (WMPN) and provides medical care for babies of all gestations. There are over 6500 deliveries each year on site, but we aim to provide the intensive and high dependency care required by all of the 10,000 babies born within the trust each year.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be mainly based at the Birmingham Heartlands (BHH) site but will be expected to work at any of the other sites

*Out of hours on calls will be at BHH covering level 3 Neonatal unit. On call frequency will be 1:8.9. This will require onsite presence between 0900-21:00 hours on weekdays and weekends/bank holidays.

*Consultants work a 'Consultant of the Week' pattern covering the NICU and other areas within Heartlands Hospital Neonatal service.

*Around 6 weeks per year Intensive/High Dependency cover (First-On)

*Around 6 weeks per year Special Care, TC and PNW Cover (Second-On)

*Around 6 weeks per year as Third-on who assists with ward rounds, undertakes antenatal counselling and visits Good Hope SCBU. Some of this week is designated as SPA time.

*There may be some commitment at Good Hope Hospital during third on weeks and to support teaching/training of staff.

*Outpatient Clinics: approximately 19 clinics year. Clinic may be at Heartlands or Solihull Hospital

*Out of hours work is paid as category 'A' supplement and has an overall frequency of 1:8.9 on-call for Heartlands Hospital Neonatal Unit.

*Participation in teaching and training of junior staff and those in other medical disciplines, nursing, midwifery and support staff as appropriate.

*Participation in regional neonatal training days to maintain neonatal skills

*Participation in Neonatal Training and simulation days to maintain the skills of colleagues working in Good Hope SCU

*Research training, including GCP and clinical trial administration

*Participation in clinical governance activities including audits, and other supporting activities as directed by the needs of the service.

*Responding and engaging with any complaints or investigations within the trust

*Attending statutory, essential and mandatory training.

*Attending and keeping up to date with child safeguarding training as per trust requirements

*Educational Supervision of trainees.

The unit has 12 critical care cots, 20 special care and 7 transitional cots. Each year there are over 800 admissions to our Neonatal service. We provide 1800 days Intensive care, 2650 High Dependency almost 6000 days of Special care and 3500 Transitional care.

The Unit has facilities for conventional ventilation, high frequency oscillation and inhaled nitric oxide. It has its own Doppler ultrasound machine and equipment for cooling infants and CFM monitoring. The unit is the designated Network cooling centre. Neonatal staff perform routine cranial ultrasonography and echocardiography on site and excellent radiological facilities, including CT and MRI scanning, are also available.

We have Transitional Care facilities and an award winning Neonatal Outreach team which help with early discharges.

Weekly perinatal meetings are held with the Fetal Medicine team. Very few cases are referred away from the Trust for perinatal care. Most are delivered locally and stabilised before transfer out for surgery at Birmingham Children's Hospital which is approximately 4 miles away. All surgery takes place at the Children's Hospital and a dedicated surgical liaison nurse from the surgical unit visits infants receiving their post-op care on the unit.

A detailed job plan will be confirmed after appointment between the appointee, the present consultants and Clinical Service Lead for Neonates. Job plans are annualised over a 42 week working year.
