Job summary

Applications are invited to apply for 3 full time Consultant Ortho-Geriatrician in Orthopaedics. This post is to join the existing Consultant Orthopaedic team and to develop the Ortho-Geriatric team based at UHB. This post will be predominately based at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. UHB provides a comprehensive service in Trauma and Orthopaedic specialties.

The post is required to support the medical needs of the trauma patients and supporting/leading the multidisciplinary team based on the trauma wards to enhance the quality and recovery of patients following trauma episodes.

The unit provides the largest Fragility Fracture service in the UK treating on average 1200 NOFs per annum. The department consists of 38 Orthopaedic Consultants, Trauma Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and a large team of Deanery trainees and Resident doctors.

It is hoped that with time the Orthogeriatric service at UHB will become nationally recognised for delivering high volume, excellent fragility fracture care in a collaborative environment.

The job plan will consist of 10 PAs with sessions that will be ward based, supporting the Fractured Neck of Femur Trauma unit at Heartlands and reviewing orthopaedic outliers, with medical management of patients admitted to the trauma wards. There will also be a requirement to undertake outpatient sessions to provide and develop the Fracture Liaison Service. It is expected that weekend working will occur with a 1 in 8 frequency.

Main duties of the job

KEY SKILLS

The post holder with support will continue to develop the role of geriatric medicine within the trauma unit, enhancing the patient's experience and continuing with the quality improvements for patients as part of the Fractured Neck of Femur pathways.

It is hoped that as this new post develops that deanery trainees from medicine and orthogeriatric will be accommodated into the rich training environment that high volume acute care provides.

The appointee should have a special interest in care of the elderly with fragility fracture whether as in-patients or in the out-patient setting and in Orthopaedic care for the elderly, specifically those admitted with Fractured Neck of Femur. The post will support collaboration between Surgeon and Geriatrician in the management of older people following trauma and enhance training for foundation doctors.

You will work as part of a collaborative approach in providing the best quality of care for our patients within the Fractured Neck of Femur unit at Heartlands Hospital

You will hold clinical responsibility for the patients in your care, ensuring that dignity, compassion and safeguarding are at the forefront of the patients care.

You will lead senior decision-making around patients care, supporting the learning of more junior doctors and trainees
