Band 2 Maternity Care Assistant

Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 2 Maternity Care Assistant to join the maternity team at the University Hospital Birmingham (UHB) trust.

We are looking for enthusiastic and passionate professionals, with good communication skills to support women and their families. The primary role of the Maternity Care Assistant is to support and work in collaboration with midwives and the wider multidisciplinary team, to provide safe and holistic approach to care. The MCA assists with and provides personal care, following completion of any relevant or appropriate training.

This post is rotational, and the employee will be provided with appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working. The post holder is expected to undertake specific training to achieve defined competencies for the role.

The role entails specific clinical tasks including maternal observations, carbon monoxide screening, offering basic support, advice and referring to the smoking cessation services, obtaining urine samples, urinalysis, obtain microbiological samples, theatre runner.

At university hospitals Birmingham (UHB) we are one of the largest maternity units within the west Midlands, delivering care for over 8400 births a year over 3 sites, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull. Main duties of the job

*Develops and maintains positive relationships, respects the woman's and her families' wishes, with kindness, compassion and empathy.

*Should be trustworthy, provide woman centred care and support, and take ownership for mistakes by reporting concerns or errors to a registered practitioner in a timely manner.

*Recognises the Maternity Care Assistants scope of practice within national frameworks and demonstrating NHS Constitution values, asking for guidance when unsure

*Ensure and participate in tracking, obtaining, and filing clinical records as required in line with local information governance and in accordance with legal requirements to maintain confidentiality and data protection

*Keeps complete, clear, accurate and timely records, utilizing digital platforms where required

*Convey an approachable and professional manner to all mothers and their families

*Demonstrates an awareness of discriminatory attitudes and challenges this behaviour, with reference to age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage, civil partnership, pregnancy, race, religion, sex, and sexual orientation.

*Is aware of legal and ethical responsibilities in relation to own role including the need to work in ways agreed by the employer

*Does not project own experiences and values onto other and demonstrates understanding of own role and contribution in creating inclusive, equitable care

*Report any safeguarding concerns immediately to the registered midwife

*Work flexibly across the midwifery service as required
