Job summary

We are excited to invite applications for an Occupational Health Doctor within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Occupational Health and Wellbeing Services team, providing expert clinical services across Trust sites and key external partners in the West Midlands.

We welcome doctors from a broad range of clinical backgrounds, who are seeking to diversify their professional practice. Whether you are looking to specialise in Occupational Medicine or integrate it into a portfolio career, this post offers excellent flexibility and scope for professional development. The successful applicant will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive occupational health services including clinical assessments, fitness-for-work evaluations, workplace risk management, and strategic health initiatives. There are also opportunities to contribute to service development, teaching and supervision, research, and quality improvement.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Assessments & Advice

*Conduct detailed clinical evaluations of employees' health and fitness for work, offering guidance in line with Employment and Equality Law and Occupational Health Good Practice.

*Provide expert advice to managers and Human Resources on:

*Rehabilitation and return-to-work planning following sickness absence.

*Clinical assessments and case management including recommendations for adjustments and restrictions.

*Advice on early retirement on grounds of ill health.

*Health matters affecting work capacity, promoting health and preventing illness in accordance with Trust policies.

Deliver a comprehensive range of OH activities, including:

*Management and self-referrals

*Fitness-for-work medicals

*Case conferences and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings

*Workplace assessments and pre-placement health screenings

*Drug and alcohol screening

*Immunisations and immunity checks

*Health surveillance (including Appointed Doctor medicals)

*Capability assessments

*Communicable disease management

*Legislative compliance and policy development

*Medical input into accident/incident investigations

*Infection Control & Disease Management

*Liaise with the Trust's Infection Control Team and Public Health authorities in cases of notifiable communicable diseases.

*Provide guidance on health surveillance programmes and periodic medical exams for employees exposed to workplace hazards.

  • *Primary Medical Degree
  • *Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
  • *Shall have completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty;
  • *Shall have equivalent experience and competencies
  • *Diploma in Occupational Medicine (or equivalent)

Experience

  • *Ability to manage and lead on occupational health clinical responsibilities.
  • *An understanding of the requirements of Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement
  • *Recent experience of clinical audit and policy writing
  • *Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets

  • *Prompt & timely responsiveness to Management agenda
  • *Ability to synthesise and prioritise complex and conflicting information
