Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Band 7 Digital Midwife to join the Maternity Services team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

The Maternity Service at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is highly digitised, with minimal reliance on paper documentation within clinical areas. The digital infrastructure includes a comprehensive Electronic Maternity Patient Record (EMPR), supporting a fully integrated approach to care.

The service has established a clear strategic direction to maximise the effective and efficient use of digital technologies and information systems. This is aimed at enhancing care quality, improving patient safety, and driving operational efficiencies.

The post-holder will play a key leadership role in supporting digital innovation within the maternity service. Acting as both a digital champion and a professional representative of the midwifery workforce, the individual will ensure that digital solutions align with clinical standards and support safe, evidence-based practice.

A core responsibility will be to support the maintenance, ongoing development, and implementation of the maternity record system and associated information management and technology (IM&T) systems, ensuring they continue to meet the evolving needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

Leading and supporting the development, maintenance, and implementation of the maternity record and related IM&T (Information Management and Technology) systems.

Overseeing progress against digital transformation plans and ensuring alignment with national and local priorities.

Developing a networked approach to enable shared learning and collaboration across maternity services.

Supporting NHSX's five missions, including reducing the burden on staff, empowering patients with digital tools, improving safety, and enhancing productivity.

The post-holder will act as an autonomous and accountable practitioner, working both independently and collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team. They will be a visible presence within clinical areas, working alongside midwives and supporting them in day-to-day practice to ensure digital solutions are effective, user-friendly, and aligned with clinical needs.

This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of digital midwifery and to play a key part in delivering better outcomes and experiences for women, babies, and families through digital transformation.
