Band 4 Macmillan Skin Cancer Support Worker

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Cancer Clinical Support Worker to join our busy Dermatology team at University Hospital Birmingham. The role is based at Solihull Hospital with cross site working to Good Hope Hospital.

The post holder will be a key member of the Cancer Nurse Specialist (CNS) team and will deliver a range of clinical tasks and offer compassionate care to patients with skin cancer, their relatives and carers alike.

The post holder will work under the direct supervision of the CNSs, have health care experience and knowledge of personalised care initiatives in cancer and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, team working and the ability to plan and prioritise their workload to meet changing demands within the service.

Main duties of the job

*Provide dedicated and knowledgeable support to patients receiving cancer care and treatment at UHB.

*Communicate directly with patients, relatives and carers demonstrating empathy, understanding and respect. Information discussed and received will often require tact or persuasive skills, to ensure safety and understanding around treatment side effects as well as an understanding of complex information around treatment options.

*Be aware of the particular physical and psychological needs of cancer patients, observe and listen and report any patients concerns in accordance with guidance provided.

*Refer to and Co-ordinate care between teams where appropriate and following discussion with clinical nurse specialists or members of the MDT

*Plan and organise own workload to ensure patient needs are prioritised.

*Complete patient care plans (from an established template), based on information derived from a Holistic Needs Assessment

*Participate and support patient experience and service feedback

*Be responsible to maintaining documentation and acting on alerts on IT systems UHB IT systems as well as Somerset Cancer Registry and Remote monitoring Systems
