Locum Consultant - Hand, Wrist and Trauma Surgery

Job summary

The post advertised is for an appointment within the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust based at Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital (HGS) sites. The appointment is in line with the department's ambitious vision to restore and expand its elective capacity and intended to support the HGS upper limb trauma service and elective elbow, hand and wrist service.

The posts will support the department's needs as well as capabilities within the full range of general Trauma & Orthopaedic on-call work with a 1:8-week frequency, including adult and paediatric trauma, outside referrals and in-house emergencies.

The trust is a Major Trauma Centre and is one of the busiest elective centres in England. The T&O department delivers services across multiple sites, so the applicant will be expected to work on different sites as part of their normal job plan.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be expected to help in reducing the significant backlog of the Trust's inpatient and outpatient waiting lists, as well as being an integral part of the departments on call service.

The post holder will work to a 10 PA job plan.

The job description itself may be amended from time to time in consultation with the post holder, within the scope and general level of responsibility attached to the post.

*GMC Registration

*CCT or equivalent

*Current ATLS or European Trauma Course provider or instructor

*Orthopaedic on call service managing complex trauma in both adults and children

*Greater than 12-month formal fellowship training which should include hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder

*Training in orthopaedic and plastic hand surgery at fellowship level

*Supporting the upper limb trauma service from shoulder to hand.

*Supporting the elective hand, wrist and elbow service.

*Demonstrates good interpersonal skills with patients, relatives and members of the clinical team.

*Ability to gain confidence and trust.

*Ability to cope with pressure.

*Ability to respond to change.

*Good written and oral English language skills.

*Leadership skills appropriate to:

The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics has the following facilities:

*Seven T&O wards (QE 2, Heartlands 2, Good Hope 2, Solihull 1)

*Twelve dedicated T&O operating theatres (QE 3, Heartlands 3, Good Hope 3, Solihull 3)

*Access to ambulatory care unit and day case theatres

*Access to beds in the hospital's Critical Care Units

*Full imaging services, including MRI scanning units.

*Full out-patient facilities with electronic patient records

*Full post-graduate training facilities

Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals deliver a range of trauma and elective services with an extensive catchment area. Heartlands hospital is a trauma unit and delivers the largest fragility fracture service in Europe. Solihull Hospital is being transformed into an elective care centre with 6 new theatres due to open in July 2024. Good Hope hospital currently provides an elective service and a delivers a high volume of complex arthroplasty. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham was designated a Major Trauma Centre (MTC) on 26 March 2012, leading to an increase in emergency work to the department. The QE site already has special expertise in the management of all forms of trauma and is role 4 for the repatriation of military personnel as we work closely with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM).

In addition to providing an emergency service to the Greater Birmingham area and the RCDM, the unit deals with the full range of post trauma and trauma related patients and elective orthopaedic procedures, with staffing as follows:

*42 equivalent whole time Consultant posts

*7 Specialist Surgeons

Resident Medical staff support the service workload.

The Trauma & Orthopaedics service has a robust team of MSK Radiologists and general radiology support to the major trauma service. There is 24/7 access to CT, interventional radiology and MRI. All theatres lists are normally supported by Consultant Anaesthetists. The service is supported by physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, psychologists and social work support. Pivotal to the service is the role of Trauma Nurse Practitioners
