Job summary
A Junior Specialist Doctor (Higher) position is offered for a fixed term period. The post is suitable for a surgeon looking to broaden their general surgery experience in a major teaching hospital tertiary unit. The post is versatile and can be tailored to individual learning requirements.
Main duties of the job
The Hospital provides a busy emergency on-call service, which accepts a full range of general surgical emergencies. It is expected that the post holder will participate in a 1 in 13 on call emergency surgery rota.
The admitting Consultant Surgeon of the day provides General Surgical support to the whole trust, attending trauma cases and other surgical emergencies. The Trauma Service is supported by Vascular and Orthopaedic Consultants; Military casualties are cared for on a separate ward.

The Trust was designated a Level 1 Trauma Centre in April 2011 in line with national recommendations for the planning and provision of care for seriously injured patients and went online as a Major trauma Centre in April 2012.
The Centre for Defence Medicine is based within this Trust. Military casualties from abroad are airlifted to the unit once they have been stabilised and usually are under the care of the dedicated trauma teams. The Centre for Defence Medicine is fully integrated into the Trust and military personnel work in all departments, with emphasis on SAU and ITU.
