Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for you to join a centre of Pathology excellence at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), one of the largest teaching hospitals in England. We have state of the art facilities across 4 sites (Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope & Solihull hospitals).
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic & experienced Pre-Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) with experience in aspects of Immunology who must be a HCPC registered BMS. This role is based at Heartlands Hospital but there may be a requirement to work across all UHB sites.

Our service is UKAS accredited, made up of a specialist and experienced team, all working towards a common goal. The department uses a range of state-of-the-art equipment including:
*Thermofisher Phadia Immunocap 250 analysers
*Sebia Octa Cap 3 & Hydrasys
*Beckman Navios & Aquios Flow Cytometers
*Binding Site Optilite analysers
*Werfen QL3000 and DS2 analysers
*Euroimmun Euro Blot One analyser

Main duties of the job
The laboratory operates an extended service with an expectation to support departmental shift systems as required, after training - including weekends & public holidays.
Shifts include Early (08:00-16:00), Day (09:00-17:00) and Mid (12:00-20:00) The hours worked are led by the demands of the service and may be amended as required.
The candidate will be expected to have a good understanding of areas within Immunology, working in different sections on a rotational basis maintaining skills & competency. We are looking for people who work well in a team & are excellent communicators.
The post holder will be responsible for performing tasks to meet the needs of the lab service. This could include a range of technical, scientific, professional & clinical duties to achieve the objectives of efficient & effective patient care, ensuring that the needs of the laboratory are met to deliver a quality clinical service including but not limited to:
*To safely handle, use & dispose of biological samples including blood, urine, faeces, CSF & semen, body tissues & other body fluids/samples and hazardous &/or radioactive chemicals
*Undertake maintenance on a wide range of specialised lab instruments & equipment prior to them being used for patient investigations
*Maintain compliance with good laboratory practice, quality assurance procedures in accordance with UKAS ISO 15189 standards.
*Technically validate, interpret & report results within the agreed turnaround times.
