Job summary
At University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), we are proud to be one of the largest maternity units in the Midlands, with around 8,400 births annually, serving a diverse population. Our dedicated team includes over 400 midwives, 34 Consultants, as well as anaesthetists, sonographers, and Neonatal experts.
As part of our supportive team of ward managers, you will lead the Maternity Urgent Assessment Unit (MUAU) at Heartlands Hospital. Our aim is to provide the highest standard of care to women and their families while creating a work environment where our staff can thrive.
In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing Maternity Triage, ensuring that service users and the public receive responsive, accessible care. You will draw upon your expert midwifery knowledge and demonstrate effective, compassionate leadership to guide the Midwifery and Multidisciplinary team, comprising both clinical and non-clinical staff. You will deliver safe, kind, and personalised care based on the latest research. You will work closely with the Matron to lead the team through changes, exhibiting tenacity, drive, professionalism, and balance in your leadership approach.
The successful candidate will be expected to promote the values and vision of University Hospitals Birmingham through their actions and leadership, modelling these principles in how we support our teams and deliver services. You will be responsible for ensuring that the Trust's Strategy is implemented effectively within the MUAU area.
Main duties of the job
To provide leadership in the clinical area of responsibility, co-ordinator to all staff efforts to ensure the provision of high-quality care and choice for women
To support and promote the effective use of maternity triage assessment using tools such a Birmingham Symptom Specific Obstetric Triage (BSOTS )
Maintain and develop a high level of clinical and managerial skills and knowledge, and work towards competencies as agreed in personal development plan
Comply with requirements for mandatory training and develop and contribute towards training in key pertinent skills
Be aware of Local Safeguarding Children's Board and national policies and procedures and take appropriate action to safeguard women
Comply with the Trust Infection Control Policy. Attend infection control training as required with the department and directed by manager
To support the senior management in the utilisation of resources in the maintenance of the environment and effective staffing arrangements. Perform effective budget management within area of responsibility.
Actively participate in the implementation of Clinical Governance and Risk Management ensure all incidents from ward base area are reviewed and actioned
To ensure that evidence-based practice is implemented, through involvement in production of guidelines, policies and procedures and audits to encourage and promote innovative practice
Is responsible for appraising all staff and ensuring that they have the necessary skills to deliver their role
