Job summary

The Birmingham Liver Unit was established in 1982 and has developed into a programme that includes Liver Transplantation, a full service of clinical hepatology and HPB surgery, and a centre for research and innovation.

The surgical team works together with the hepatology service as Queen Elizabeth Hospitals liver unit which is one of the largest liver transplant and HPB centres in Europe. Paediatric liver, kidney, intestinal and multivisceral transplants are performed at Birmingham Childrens Hospital. The Liver Unit offers a complete range of medical and surgical management covering the full spectrum of liver, biliary and pancreatic diseases. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham is a tertiary centre for liver and pancreatic cancer; where patients are managed in conjunction with oncologists from the QEH Cancer Centre and other regional oncology centres.

QEHB contains a regional trauma centre, a regional neurosurgical centre and a large regional oncology centre which caters for a full range of cancer services, including a specialised service for hepatic and pancreatic oncology.

The Trust has close links with the University of Birmingham. University research facilities on the QEHB site provide laboratories for high quality basic research in diverse fields including immunology, molecular biology and oncology.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will participate as a leading member of the surgical team for the assessment, management and follow up of patients with liver diseases, pre and post liver transplant. He/she will be expected to perform liver transplants independently. Skills in liver splitting, and living related transplantation as well as knowledge and skills in liver machine perfusion will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in an on-call rota to provide liver transplant surgery and participate in a multiorgan retrieval rota as the team leader. On call activity also includes transplant ward rounds and daily numbers meeting.
